Cape Cod: The Cape all-star tweaked an oblique on July 17, missed the July 22 all-star game and never returned to the Kettleers lineup. However, with a summer of .329/.374/.494 production and continued strong defense behind the dish, Lomavita further emboldened his status as a Day One draft prospect. There are very few catchers in the college game who have a chance to hit, hit for power and possess the needed abilities to stay behind the plate over the long term. Lomavita is one who does. Coming off a sophomore spring season in which he produced a .316 batting average with 16 home runs for the Golden Bears, he’s an aggressive hitter who rarely walks and puts the bat on the ball early in the count. Behind the plate he’s a natural defender with above average arm strength. Any refinement to his approach in the batter’s box from very aggressive to selective aggressive will only add to his draft value.
There are very few catchers in the college game who have a chance to hit, hit for power and possess the needed abilities to stay behind the plate. Lomavita is one who does, and with continued development he’s a first round candidate for the 2024 draft. With an aggressive approach the 5-foot-11, 200-pound right handed hitter slashed .316/.367/.612 with 16 home runs. There’s no doubt that he is up there to swing the bat. Showing above average arm strength, athletic feet and direct footwork, Lomavita popped a 1.96 to the second base bag from his knees on a pitch down and well away during game action. He’s also just a natural catcher, doing things on instinct instead of with a programmed approach. He’s also an above average runner underway who has stolen nine bases this spring. His former around the ball swing path has improved from last summer in the Cape and is now able to better utilize the entire field instead limiting most of his power to his pull side. One of the most fun prospects to watch in the entire tournament.
Cape Cod: A Hawaii prep who was ranked as the No. 9 Impact Freshman in our Pac-12 season preview, the 5-foot-11, 200-pound Lomavita was a Cape All-Star after garnering All Pac-12 honors this past spring. A right handed hitter he slashed .316/.354/.421 this summer for the Kettleers, providing consistent contributions on both sides of the ball. With average arm strength, athletic feet and direct footwork, Lomavita popped a 1.97 to the second base bag during game action. He's also an above average runner underway (15-for-17 stolen bases this past spring) and a threat to bunt, as well as one who can drive the gaps at the plate. Although his around the ball swing path limits much of his power to his pull side. There are very few catchers in the college game who have both a chance to hit and possess the needed abilities to stay behind the plate. Lomavita is one who does, and with continued development and production, he could be a candidate for the early rounds of the 2024 draft.
