The uncommitted junior right-hander was more than deserving of a win on Opening Day against Hahnville, but had to settle for a no-decision despite a dominant outing.
Nugent turned in five shutout innings against a dangerous Hahnville lineup, allowing just three hits while walking three and striking out 10. He needed only 91 pitches to get through his work, pounding the zone with 53 strikes and consistently working ahead.
He commanded his 82-85 mph fastball with confidence, showing the ability to spot it to both sides of the plate, but was particularly effective when driving it to his glove-side. Nugent complemented the heater with a bigger 68-71 mph curveball that he could land for strikes in any count, keeping hitters off balance. He also mixed in a 73-75 mph changeup with feel, showing the ability to neutralize both right-handed and left-handed bats.
At 6-foot-2, 195 pounds, Nugent possesses a strong, durable frame with room for continued development. If the velocity ticks up as the spring progresses, he’s an uncommitted arm in the New Orleans area that college programs will want to keep a close eye on.
