2022 MLB Draft: The Vandy C/1B shows easy right-handed power to all fields as the ball jumps off his bat. His track record the past two seasons in the SEC is undeniable. After a .345 average and 15 home runs in 2021, Keegan put together another strong season this year with a .371/.458/.646 slash and his 14 home runs led the Commodores. Defensively at first base, Keegan looks the part of above average defender, showing consistent skill on short hop picks while showing above average range and better than average arm strength. He also moves well enough that corner outfield is also a possibility, adding versatility to his value. As a fourth-year junior who turned down the Yankees in the 19th round last summer, Keegan is a top five round talent. And he's likely a top three round talent to the team that feels he can stick behind the plate, at least enough for a part-time role at the Major League level.
Keegan was out of sync in the batter's box. He finished 1-for-12 at the plate and was repeatedly out front, hitting numerous choppers to the left side. On the bright side, he competed in the batter's box and did not strike out the entire weekend. When going "right" Keegan will show easy right-handed power to all fields as the ball jumps off his bat. Playing first base throughout this series, Keegan has recently seen his time behind the plate dwindle in favor of Jack Bulger who caught all three games. At first base Keegan looked the part of above average defender, making numerous short hop picks while showing above average range and better than average arm strength. He also moves well enough that corner outfield is also a possibility, adding versatility to his value. Regardless of one bad weekend, his track record the past two seasons in the SEC is undeniable. After a .345 average and 15 home runs in 2021, Keegan has put together another strong season this year with a .366/.443/.644 slash and his 12 home runs leads Vandy. Cape Cod- After hitting .345/.427/.638 with 15 homers as a 3YR SO this spring, Keegan kept on raking for Y-D, hitting .302 with five homers in just 43 at-bats. He's a powerful righthanded hitter who really excels at driving the ball to the opposite field, and he hit some loud homers to dead-center this summer. He also worked to engage his back side and pull the ball with authority this summer, and his work in that area really showed up in batting practice. After spending most of the spring at first base, Keegan also saw action behind the plate this summer and worked to clean up his receiving and blocking, but scouts still question whether his hands work well enough to stick behind the plate long term. He got better each time he caught, according to Pickler, and a big area of emphasis is improving his transfer to help his average to slightly above-average arm play.
2021 MLB Draft: After two non-descript seasons at the plate, Keegan started out 2021 with a bang, hitting over .500 with four home runs during his first 10 games. COVID then sidelined the SEC’s leading hitter for two weeks, but he returned and completed a strong season, leading the Commodore regulars in average (.345), doubles (17) and slugging while trailing just Carter Young in home runs with 15 of his own. With a Mark McGwire-like crouched set-up he shows good intent to hit the ball hard. Without much separation there is still some length to his swing, but it’s flat into the zone with good bat lag. He has the type of swing that should continue to produce and certainly attract plenty of attention, despite his limited profile as a right-handed hitting college first baseman.
After two nondescript seasons at the plate his freshman and sophomore seasons, Keegan started out 2021 with a bang, hitting over .500 with four home runs during his first ten games. However, covid then sidelined the SEC’s leading hitter for two weeks until he returned to the diamond this past Sunday, batting in the 3-hole. With a Mark McGwire-like crouched setup he showed good intent to hit the ball hard. Without much separation there is still some length to his swing, but it’s flat into the zone with good bat lag. He has the type of swing that should continue to produce, certainly not at his current .514/.622/1.171 slash, but enough to attract plenty of attention, despite his limited profile as a right-handed hitting college first baseman.
