2022 MLB Draft: Heading into the spring season, Lipscomb was viewed by most as a mid Day Three selection, at best. He had always been a talented prospect, but he just needed the opportunity to play every day. As an everyday starter this spring, he produced a .355/.428/.717 slash line with 22 home runs and 84 RBI. His strikeout rate was also an outstanding 12.8%. Numbers like these are excellent for any conference, but he produced in the SEC. At 6-foot-1, 195-pounds he's lean and dense-massed with excellent core strength. When Lipscomb hits the ball it just makes a different sound. Defensively, he shows plus arm strength and projects to be at least average at third base in professional baseball. As a fourth-year junior, he might be a little older than much of the 2022 college draft class, but his performance stood out for the best team in the best conference in the country. Expect Lipscomb to be considered around the third round this July.
Heading into the spring season, Lipscomb was viewed by most as a mid Day Three selection, at best. He had always been a talented prospect, but he just needed the opportunity to play every day. As an everyday starter this spring, he has produced a .358/.425/.788 slash line with 16 home runs and 61 RBI. Numbers like these are excellent for any conference, but he's producing in the SEC. At 6-foot-1, 195-pounds he's lean and dense-massed with excellent core strength. When he hits the ball it just makes a different sound and he consistently finds the barrel for hard contact. Defensively, Lipscomb shows plus arm strength and projects to be at least average at third base at the pro level. There are some footwork inconsistencies that he will need to iron out in the future, but Lipscomb shows all of the needed abilities to stick on the dirt. As a fourth-year junior, he might be a little older than much of the 2022 college draft class, but his performance stands out for the best team in the best conference in the country. Expect Lipscomb to be considered around the 4th round this July.
Playing behind 7th-rounder Jake Rucker at third base in 2021, the athletic Lipscomb has always been a talented prospect. He just needed the opportunity to play every day. Now with that chance he is off and running. Lipscomb leads the juggernaut Volunteer offense with 13 home runs, a .831 SLG and is third in batting average at .373. Among all of his tools and talents, the one thing that stands out for me is that Lipscomb is just built differently. At 6-foot-1, 195-pounds he's lean and dense-massed with excellent core strength. When he hits the ball it just makes a different sound. No metal "pings" with him, all that's heard is a "thud." Defensively, he shows plus arm strength and projects to be at least average at third base at the pro level. There are some footwork inconsistencies that he will need to work out in the future, but Lipscomb shows all the tools and skills needed to stick on the dirt at the hot corner. In the batter's box there's less cleanup needed now than last fall against Louisiana Tech in Millington (Tenn.) when he showed a diving stride and more length to his swing. But just as he did on that day, and again upon this recent look against Missouri – and as he's been doing all spring long – the man consistently finds the barrel for hard contact. His five-tool talents have all come together this season. As a fourth-year junior, he might be a little older than much of the 2022 college draft class, but his performance stands out for the best team in the best conference in the country. Expect Lipscomb to be considered around the 4th round this summer.
At the hot corner, the solid defense of Lipscomb and his plus-to-better arm strength were evident all day long. There's some cleanup needed at the plate with a diving stride and length to his swing, but he found the barrel for a trio of base hits; a hard liner to right field for a single, another hard liner for a double down the right field line and a line drive double to left field when he hooked a changeup. The right-handed hitting Lipscomb also produced a .310 average in a reserve role last season and is the front-runner to win a starting spot at third this spring.
A lanky and projectable middle infield prospect, Lipscomb is an intriguing player in the 2018 class because of his untapped potential as a player. He has natural athleticism combined with his projectable frame which he should add good weight to down the road. He shows bat speed at the plate along with range from the shortstop position. May not stay at short down the road. Lipscomb committed to Tennessee this summer.
