Slender bodied 6-foot lefty was up to 92 mph with his lively fastball in his start against Arizona at the Friscoe Classic. In its comfort zone the 89-91 mph pitch had above average life with below average command. Also flashed an above average 74-77 mph curve with good shape and depth. It will need more teeth to become a finish pitch, but the potential to spin is there. Third pitch was a firm, 85 mph changeup.
4/29/17
One of top uncommited players in the 2018 class. Vail has a projectable lanky build at 5-foot-11 150-pounds. Sat 84-86 in the first inning. Lightning quick arm from a high-3/4 slot. Showcased a slider at 73 mph with 1/7 depth. Showed great command of slider – routinely going backdoor and backfoot to right handed hitters. Velocity dropped slightly when he went into the stretch to 82-84.
Preseason All-State Showcase (February 11, 2017)
Vail is 5-foot-11 150-pounds with long, wiry limbs and skinny shoulders. Has the build of a pitcher that still has room to fill out. One of the Top Performers of the entire event. Fastball sat 84-85 with late life and run. Breaking ball backed up on him slightly at 68-70, looked like he was pulling front side too much. Changeup had some armside fade at 77-78 mph. Loose, whippy arm action, very little effort in delivery. True 3/4 slot from left side projects to be a sinker-slider type pitcher at the next level. Finish is under control over lead leg, lands square to home plate. Finish is upright with a slight recoil. In balance position he raises front knee straight up, then visually drives lead hip toward the plate. Sinks balance leg. Front side is tucked in toward chest as he rides down the mound. Shows elasticity in back and shoulder upon load and release. Methodical, yet explosive on release. Fastball and changeup were located down in the zone, curveball missed high armside.
Winter Trials South (January 30, 2016)
Andrew is a slightly built 5-foot-7 130 pound LHP with room for physical gains. Pitching- Andrew sets up with his feet close together to the arm side of the rubber. He uses a controlled drop step up to a 3/4 chest high leg drive. Rides back side into an aggressive stride where he lands closed. Gets tremendous torque through his core and his arm speed feeds off of this, working through a low 3/4 slot. Upbeat pace to his delivery with a "come and get it" approach. FB sat 79-80 MPH, touching 81 MPH. Featured a sweeping 10-to-4 curveball at 64-65 MPH and a change up with late fade at 70-71 MPH. Some slowing of the delivery down here. Huge upside, can pitch right now with good stuff. With physical build there's a high ceiling to be reached for when he physically matures.
