Upperclass Games (9/23/18) Cornwell has been a frequent attendee of events recently and has gotten better and better each time we’ve seen him. He’s a switch hitter with some line drive pop that will only increase as he continues to fill out his lanky, athletic frame. At 5-foot-9 145-pounds, Cornwell can really pick it at shortstop. His actions are effortless and smooth and a strong arm (81 MPH) across the diamond. From the left side, Cornwell starts with relaxed hands from both sides of the plate and uses a toe stride and brief tap for timing. Shows fluidity in swing path and finish – line drive hitter. In the field, shows smooth actions at SS – glove exchange is smooth and ball gets out of hand quickly. Plays through throws to first base.
2018 New Jersey State Games (7.24.18) Cornwell has a lanky 5-foot-9 145-pound build with wiry arms and room to fill out. Ran the 60 yard dash in 7.13-seconds and recorded an exit velocity of 81 MPH. Cornwell is a switch hitter with feel for the barrel from both sides. Pop will continue to improve as he adds muscle to lanky frame, but foundations are present. From the right side, Cornwell starts in a crouch with an opened stance and hands above back shoulder. As pitch comes in, Cornwell uses a foot stride to start swing, hand load is minimal. Level bat path through the zone and a controlled finish. Similarly from the left side, Cornwell is opened and uses the same foot stride to start his swing. From the left side, Cornwell starts with the bat rested on his shoulder and parallel to the ground. In the infield, Cornwell took reps from shortstop and recorded throws that topped at 81 MPH across the diamond. Smooth, easy glovework and transition into a high-¾ slot. Short, quick and easy arm stroke with slight arm side run.
6.2.18 Cornwell has a lanky and athletic frame at 5-foot-9, 145-pounds. He ran the 60 yard dash in 7.27 seconds. Recorded an exit velo of 75 MPH from the right side and 73 MPH from the left side. From the right side he starts slightly open with hands at shoulder height and bat resting on his shoulder. Hands create pre pitch rhythm. Hands move backwards slightly during load while elbow becomes parallel to the ground. Shifts his lower half to adjust to pitches all over the zone. Uses a small stride. Balanced throughout the swing and projects as a line drive hitter. Keeps same mechanics from the left side except hands sink lower during load. Defensively, took reps from the INF and recorded a velo of 73 MPH. Feet move quick and is able to get around the baseball. Approaches the ball aggressively yet under control. Brings the ball to his midsection and makes his transfer there. Gets rid of the baseball quickly from a 3/4 arm slot.
