6-29-2018: A knee injury cost Mesagno all of the 2018 Spring season. Despite the setback, he’s been one of the most consistent hitters in the league and seems to be approaching full health now. 5’11/185 pounds with a strong and muscular upper body. Lower half is thick and powerful. Limited projection left. Average athlete that profiles best to corner outfield. Arm action is quick and compact. Avoids getting too long and loose on his takeaway when he throws. Intrigued to see what he looks like in the outfield next spring once he’s back to 100%. Stands out for his overall hitting approach and ability to keep the ball in the middle of the field. Square and simple set-up in the box. Uses a forward step as opposed to any type of leg lift to get into his swing. Hands stay just below the back shoulder. Utilizes a subtle scap load and keeps hands quiet/still. Barrel gets flat early and stays level thru the zone. Consistently gives himself the chance to hit behind the ball even if timing isn’t perfect. Noticeable quickness and strength in the hands. Doesn’t generate much lift in his swing. More of a level finish as the barrel gets past his front side. The swing is built more for average than power, which makes his running ability that much more important. So far he’s been an effective baserunner, seven-for-nine in stolen base attempts. Have to wait and see how the speed tests out once fully recovered. (Dan Jurik)
