The 6-foot-4, RHP uses an aggressive, up-tempo approach which adds to his mound presence. He utilizing a high leg kick delivery with a slight turn of the trunk that adds deception. From that point, the mechanics are fluid, directional, and easy to repeat. He has a compact, small arm circle and pitches from a high 3/4-arm slot. His timing and hand break is very consistent allowing him to get on top of the baseball and locate to the bottom 1/3 of the strike zone with a solid three pitch mix.
Murphy's fastball has been up to 93 MPH this spring and he will sit in the 86-90 range with sharp bite to his arm side when down in the zone. He has excellent command of both sides of the plate, however he will occasionally get overaggressive with his front side and miss off to his arm side. His changeup is his most advanced secondary offering due to his ability to maintain hand speed. The velocity is typically plays 8 to 10 MPH off of his fastball with very similar spin and action. His curveball is 72-75 MPH and has tight, 12/6 spin. His advanced feel for pitching allows him to vary the size of the shape depending on the count and situation. He has impressive pitch-ability for a high school arm.
