Bell is coming off of a strong performance at our OR Top Prospect Games over Memorial Day weekend and heads into the Fall as one of the top remaining uncommitted players in his class. The frame has continued to develop since our first initial look back in June of 2020. For a taller prospect with long levers, he does a nice job stay short to the ball and keeping loose flexion in his upper half. Which allows the hands to stay tight to the body and work inside the baseball. Uses an athletic, rhythmic load into his landing then accelerates barrel with late aggression. Highly likely we see continue to see the power increase. Defensively he moves with steady, deliberate tempo and understands the speed of the play. Has to work harder to stay low because of his height but it’s not an issue for him on the INF as he has quality mobility and can consistently stay down on the ball. Arm action is loose and whippy and he varies his arm slot based on the throw.
One of the best all-around performances on the day came from ‘22 INF Devin Bell. Showing off a thicker, more defined frame than we saw last summer, the added physicality made a big impact with his speed and arm strength especially. A taller, high waisted athlete with long levers. Bell moves well with controlled actions and consistent tempo. At the plate, he creates consistent leverage and there’s likely more power to come as he keeps growing. The swing gets on plane early and stays level into contact. His timing was locked in during game play and he ended the scrimmage going 2-4 while facing quality arms all day.
6-foot-2, 160 pounds with a lean build and length in his frame. Sets up with feet outside shoulder width, slight bend in knees and open lower half. Drives front knee towards back hip with a high leg kick. Stays tall, balanced as he gathers weight. Gets some length in lower half with a longer stride into landing. Hands show a slight move to adjust barrel angle prior to launching swing. Level, rotational finish with gap-to-gap type approach. Defensively, starts wide and uses a subtle pre-pitch hop as he reads the ball off the bat. Deliberate tempo when moving to the ball. Gets wide with a flat upper half over the ball while funneling in. Glove-tap exchange into long, loose throwing motion and low ¾ slot. On the mound, used a mechanically sound, repeatable delivery while working from the center of the rubber. High leg lift with slight collapse on back-side as he gets into hand break. Shoulder plane stays level as he gets down the slope. Slight cross action at landing with lead leg. Shorter, more compact arm action than he flashed on defense, allowing his arm to be on-time at foot strike. Tall, upright finish out over his front side.
