Yet another Commodore who wasn't his typical self this weekend, the loose-armed right-hander was up/down during his Saturday start, allowing five runs on six hits in 6.1 IP. He also walked four, showing more control than command with any pitch in his arsenal. His best offering has typically been his fastball, but on this look it was an above average 82-84 mph slider with good depth and late bite. It was a swing/miss pitch, especially when sequenced with his lively fastball up in the zone. His heater sat in the low-90s, touching 94 and he mixed an occasional average quality changeup at 86-87. McElvain attempts to attack the zone with his above average stuff, but his season-long control is a growing concern now with 41 walks in 75 IP. At 6-foot-1, 205 pounds he's athletic with a starter-type delivery and arm action. But, without the needed command, the industry consensus is that he's destined for the bullpen at the professional level. His stuff is top five round talent, however his control may slot him a bit lower on Day Two this July.
11/10/19
McElvain sat 91-93 mph with some late, quick sink at the plate during his one inning pitched, while also showing an average low-80s slider from a high three-quarter slot.

Max FB: 91, FB (86-90), CB (76-79), CH (79) 6-1, 180-pound RHP continues to show like a potential top 10 round draft in 2019. Full windup w/ H 3/4 release and lightning quick arm. Clean and repeatable. FB shows arm side run w/ occasional sink. CB is a tight medium downer that flashes above avg depth. Occasionally gets slurvy. CH is thrown w/ armspeed and sink. Fills the strike zone, generated 46 % swing and miss against Walters State. Elite RHP shows as one of the best 2019 arms in the state.
9/10/17 - 6-1, 180-pound middle infielder. Righty hitter hits from a straight on, slightly crouched stance w/ low back shoulder hand location and slight bat waggle. Leg kick and hand load where hands drop nearly to the belt before returning to a near shoulder level location. Above avg bat speed w/ barrel that stays in zone. Needs more reps against velo, but there is offensive upside here. Vanderbilt commit.
McElvain was selected for the USA Baseball 15U National team and contributed significantly to the gold-medal winning squad at the Pan American Games. With a fastball that sits consistently in the mid to upper-80's, he shut down Venezuela in the opening game of the tournament, allowing no runs in five innings of work. A versatile player, McElvain plays SS for his high school team, while catching and playing third base for his summer travel ball team.
