12/19/20

6-foot-2, 175-pound senior has shown late emergence as a potential two-way candidate.  Projectable frame with room to add more and improved athleticism since summer '19. Positionally, right handed hitting catcher, who has improved arm strength (79 C Velo) and pop times (2.06-2.13), but Griner has seen his biggest jump offensively.  Balanced, wider stance with minimal load and gets foot down leading to consistent timing.  Short, compact swing with consistent hard contact (Max Exit Velo: 93.6 mph; Avg: 89.5 mph per Trackman) and gap to gap power (Distance: 351 ft).  Generates good bat speed and strong at impact, looks to be solid offensive contributor.  On the bump, simple delivery with good pace.  Attacked the zone and filled it up with two-pitch mix.  FB worked 81-84 with life thru the zone and some spin upside (Max: 2211 rpm; Avg: 2079 rpm).  Worked it down in the zone, and could beat barrels elevated. Best secondary was 69-71 mph 10/4 SL, which could get a touch slurvy, but flashes of late bite and strong tunnel off FB.

6/11/19

60: 7.12 C Velo: 71 Pop Time: 2.20-2.25 Exit Velo: 80

6-foot-1, 170-pound, long limbed player that has barely scratched the surface on frame potential. Offensively, shows good presence in the box. Setup is slightly open with a majority of his weight already preset to the backside. Handset is neutral showing good signs of rhythm. Very quick positive move bringing the front foot back to neutral with a quick hand load. Showed an ability to spray the ball across all fields with some barrel control. Looks to project offensively as he puts on some size. Has a tendency to shift weight to front side too early causing inconsistencies. Defensively he shows good mobility behind the plate with the ability to work under the baseball. Has a tendency to drift up the third baseline during throwdown to 2nd possibly losing a couple tenths on pop time.
