High lower half, strong quads, and solid frame throughout. Shelton has always stood out defensively, back to when I first saw him as a freshman. Above average hands, feet work around the bag, quick clean exchange, and average arm strength. The added strength in the frame has done him well. In his first at bat he stayed inside of an outside fastball and drove it to left center field for a RBI double. In that at bat the hands were short to contact, stayed inside, and gained extension through contact. He shows comfort and ability to use the whole field and battled deep into counts. As the game went on the swing seemed to get a little longer. If he can stay short to contact like he did early on and do what he does best, work gap to gap, then Shelton will be an interesting 2022 to keep an eye on. Long term it is probably second base, as the arm strength will be the key, but regardless he is a consistent defender with some intrigue at the plate as well.

Shelton is 5-4 with a lankier athletic frame that has a lot projection left to it. He hits from the right side from an upright open stance, leg kick stride on line, loads back, hips rotate completely with some violence, and he maintains some balance during his swing, simple swing. Keeps hands in and is short to ball, showed good approach working gap to gap, level line drive swing, exit velocity was 76. At short, rounds ball and fields with above-average hands and a wide base. Works through ball, clean exchange. Throws from a low three-quarters arm slot, position velocity was 67. Ran a 4.46 home to first.
