VA/DC Scout Blog

Lanky athletic frame with projection left. Normal effort to the delivery and a longer arm swing from a three-quarter slot. The slot dropped occasionally on the slider, but otherwise was a true three-quarter slot. The fastball sat 82-84 mph throughout his five innings on the mound. It was scattered in the first, but he settled in with the fastball after that. It seemed to work best to the glove side and kept it down fairly well with occasional arm side run. Threw two breaking pitches on the day, which kept the hitters at bay. The curveball was 71-73 mph with bigger 12/6 break and could start and finish counts with that pitch. The slider was more of a finisher at 73-75 mph with occasional late depth. The curveball seemed to be what he was most comfortable with and seemed to be able to throw it for strikes just about whenever he wanted to. He does a nice job keeping hitters off balance with the two offspeed pitches and if the velo can tick up a notch to say the 85-87 range then with his length and feel for secondary Maloney has a chance to be a nice sleeper arm in the 2022 class.

VA/DC PreSeason All-State Central

Maloney is 6-1 with a lanky athletic 165 pound frame that has a lot of projection left to it. He hits from the right side from an open taller relaxed stance, two step stride on line, smooth load back to a slight bar. Hips rotate completely with violence and he maintains some lower half balance. Hands stay inside, quick to the ball, slightly uphill line drive swing path with strength at contact and extension through the ball, showed a good approach working gap to gap, a lot of power present in the middle of the field with more still in his future, exit velocity was 95. In the infield, quick feet, rounds ball and fields with a wider base and above average hands, works through the ball to a quick clean exchange, throws from a low three-quarters arm slot, short loose arm action, position velocity was 80. Ran a 7.20 60 yard dash. On the mound, he throws from a high three-quarters arm slot, long free quick arm action and higher effort to his delivery. Drop and drive delivery, shoulders are slightly downhill and closed, lands open with an fall off finish and some recoil. Fastball was 83-85, touching 86, with downward angle and a bit of late hard armside run to it. Curveball was 70-75 with good armspeed and hard 11/5 break to it. Change-up was 75-77 with good armspeed and heavy fade. Slider was 76-77 with good armspeed and late hard 11/5 break.
