6/23/19

Compact/athletic build, right-handed pitching prospect. Wide set on the mound, rocks into big hip turn, shoulders work closed, lands closed too. Arm circle is short, a little stiff, works through high ¾ slot. Fastball sat 76-77 mph in the first inning, settled into a 73-75 mph range from there. Curveball varied in between 12/6 and 11/5 shape, above-average depth, some early break but showed ability to locate, 62-64 mph. Tossed a complete game against a sound Illinois Indians lineup on Saturday. His strike-throwing abilities helped him compete and shutout the Indians through five. Weak contact and a couple of defensive miscues tied things up, but VanBever allowed Rhino Wisconsin to at least end it tied, 3-3, when he bailed his team out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the bottom of the seventh. He coaxed a force out at home to earn the first out and a nifty 6-4-3 double play ended it. VanBever’s final line: CG (7 IP), 3 ER, 6 H, 1 BB, 6 K.
