Shank comes to the Prep Baseball Report with nine years of college coaching experience, including seven at the Division I level, six of which as recruiting coordinator. Shank’s Division I experience includes stints at the University of Hartford, North Carolina Central University and Canisius College.

While at Hartford, Shank recruited left-hander Sean Newcomb, who went on to become the No. 15 overall pick in the 2014 MLB Draft by the Angels. In all, Shank reeled in two of the top three draft picks in addition to the most players signing a MLB contract in a two year span in Hartford baseball history.

While at North Carolina Central, Shank helped lead the school to its three winningest seasons in program history at that time. Five of his players moved on to play professionally, two of which were drafted in the MLB amateur draft. In two years at Canisius college, the Griffins won 77 games and set a then school record in 2008 with 41 wins. 10 Griffs moved on to play professionally during his time frame. In his seven years at the Division I level he signed and/or coached 30 players who moved on to play professional baseball.

Now Shank will bring his baseball experiences and connections to Virginia's prep baseball scene. Shank will work tirelessly to bring to you the most comprehensive high school baseball information Virginia has ever seen and provide coverage to all corners of the state. But he can’t do it alone. Please email him at [email protected] with college commitments, relevant news, and top players in your area.

The Burton File

Burton joins the PBR Virginia/DC staff after a four year stint as the head coach at Dinwiddie HS. A Richmond area native his entire life, Burton began his coaching career at Dinwiddie as an assistant coach from 2008 to 2012 immediately following his college playing career. Burton would then spend the 2013 season as an assistant at Matoaca HS before returning back to Dinwiddie in 2014 as Head Coach.

Burton saw tremendous success turning around The General baseball program in his four years as the Head Coach, leading The Gens to two Regional Semifinals, one conference co-championship, and one regional championship. Burton engineered one of the most successful seasons in Dinwiddie history last season in 2018, as The Gens won the region 4B championship (the first since 1990) and made their first appearance to the VHSL State Tournament since 1999. That same team featured the Region 4B Player of the year Tomas Sanchez (VCU) and 39th Rd. Draft pick of the San Diego Padres Seth Mayberry.

Raised in Dinwiddie, Burton graduated from Dinwiddie in 2002. He played at Hampden-Sydney college from 2002-2004 and transferred to Virginia State University where he played from 2005-2007. Burton graduated from VSU in December of 2007.
