2018 Ontario Youth Team - The Pitching Staff

Baseball Ontario has announced the Ontario Youth Roster, which will represent the province at the Canada Cup taking place August 8th through 12th in Moncton, New Brunswick. The Canada Cup is a premier 17U tournament and features teams from each province competing for the national championship. Ontario’s roster was announced after the completion of the 40-man tryout this past week in Vaughan, which featured 40 players vying for one of the final 20 roster spots. Below is an in depth look at the pitching staff with notes from the tryouts and what could be when the Canada Cup kicks off.

The Staff

Benjamin Adams LHP / OF / Longfields-Davidson Heights, ON / 2020

Report: The number one ranked player in PBR Ontario’s 2020 class, Adams looked very comfortable during the tryouts both on the mound and at the plate. The Ottawa Nepean product stands 6-foot-1 and 170 pounds with room to fill out and add strength. He pounded the zone effectively from a high-¾ slot and was able to repeat his delivery effectively. Over two innings, the fastball sat at 82 mph, touching 83. There was some natural movement and deception that resulted in swinging strikes. He threw a handful of hard curveballs at 72 mph that had some late bit and action. They finished in the dirt but showed projectable spin and a decent 1 to 7 shape. He did not have his best stuff after pitching two days prior, but he competed well and demonstrated some pitchability. Swinging from the right side, he possesses a smooth swing with bat speed that results in hard line drive contact. The ball jumps off his bat from a good load and rotation. Adams continues to make strides on the mound and is turning into one of the best prospects in the country and remains uncommitted.
