Canadian Insider: Class of 2020 Outlook - Canadians
Five Canadians made Prep Baseball Report’s Top 400 Overall Rankings for the 2020 class highlighting the next wave of Canadian talent. Two players from both British Columbia and Ontario made the list as well as one from Alberta, with four of the five remaining uncommitted.
A great mixture of talent from our 3 provinces in the Country, we look at the 5 prospects below and expect for more Canadians to push themselves as the 2020 class is deep across the country.
Justin Thorsteinson LHP / OF / Langley, BC / 2020Rankings OverallRank: 34 / POS: 5
Report: Thorsteinson is one of the most intriguing players in the country and has already committed to Pac-12 powerhouse, Oregon State. He backed up his commitment last summer with an impressive showing at Tournament 12 and was named to the Junior National Team where he is the youngest player on the team. The two-way player has a large, athletic frame with solid proportions. On the mound, the Langley Blaze product shows a loose delivery with sound mechanics that are repeatable. There is little effort in his motion mixed in with a little deception. The fastball has been up to 89 miles per hour this year (sitting 85-87) with some cut on a good downward plane with a balanced finish. He has shown the ability to command the fastball and there should be more in the tank. Off speed continues to develop but he has shown the ability to spin a breaking ball. At the plate, he has good bat speed with quick hands through the zone. There is strength in his swing and power should get to at least average. The British Columbia native is already receiving comparisons to Adam Loewen who was drafted 4th overall in the 2002 amateur draft by the Baltimore Orioles. There is projectability across the board in Thorsteinson who continues to develop into the best prospect in the country.
