2019 Alabama Future Games Rewind: Alex Wade

PBR Alabama Staff

Today we hear from Alex Wade (2022, OF, Madison Academy) on his experience as a member of the inaugural Team Alabama at the PBR Future Games. Wade has committed to Auburn University since the event and tells us about what the event meant to him. This year's PBR Future Games will be July 29- August 1 and will be made up of the top uncommitted 2022 and 2023 players from across the state. The Junior Future Games will also be held simultaneously as the top 2024 and 2025 graduates from Alabama will make up two teams to represent our state. Get to an event this summer to be evaluated.

Scouting Report

11/10/19

Tall, lanky RHP that works from a low ¾ slot and shows some whip in the arm action. The FB showed nice arm side action and had spin rates in the low 1900’s to low 2000’s that was up to 83 MPH. The pitch showed sink and seemed “heavy”. The breaking ball was mid 70’s (low 2100 spin rates)  with slider action and the change up showed deception with tumble at 74-75 mph. Did a nice job of locating pitches his arm side. In the OF there are no questions on defense as he can cover a ton of ground in the OF and the arm strength is there as he had the highest OF velocity (87 mph) at the event. At the plate, he continues to impress with his gap to gap power. Shows a tall, slightly open stance and has nice rhythm in the load. The hands have some quickness and he does a nice job of getting his back side through with the barrel. The swing path shows some tilt and he has carry off the barrel all over the field (97 mph exit velocity)

9/08/19

Wade continues to impress each time we see him. He can really track balls down in the OF and the arm strength is there as he threw 88 mph from the OF and gave catchers easy big hops to handle. At the plate, he has some definite juice in the barrel and shows a slow, rhythmic load of the hands to trigger the swing. Has plenty of pop to all fields. Had two hits in the game, including a 3B he absolutely smashed

6/25/19

Another guy at the event that brings a lot of tools to the field. On the mound he was effective from a ¾ slot and very nice ASR on the FB that was up to 83 mph. The pitch came out of the hand easy and seemed to really jump on hitters. He consistently showed the ability to get in on RH hitters. The breaking ball showed nice slider action but did show some depth at times at 72 mph. The ball explodes out of the hand in the OF at 86 mph and the throws were easy for the catcher to handle with easy accuracy. The athleticism is evident and the speed plays. Love the setup at the plate as Shows real nice rhythm in the swing and easy pop to all fields from a slightly tilted swing path. The stance starts open from a tall stance and he keeps the barrel through the hitting zone. A top ‘22 in the state.

6/12/19

6’2 165 lbs.- The 2022 grad shows plenty of athleticism with everything on the field. Ran a sub 7.0 60 yard dash and was 86 mph from the outfield to go along with a 93 mph exit velocity off of the tee. The tools are already in place and will likely continue to increase as he fills  out physically from an already tall, lanky build. Fluid actions all over the field. Love the barrel control from a very solid setup at the plate. Continually showed tilted line drives to both gaps during BP.

1-     How did it feel to be selected to Alabama’s first team to attend the Future Games?

I was extremely honored when I realized that I was selected. It was unbelievable being able to represent Alabama

2-     What was the atmosphere and exposure of the Future Games like? Were you impressed?

The atmosphere at the Future Games was incredible. I have never played in front of so many coaches before. I was very impressed with it.

3-     What was it like to compete versus the best players from other states in the workout and games?

I loved playing against the best from other states. It made me a better player playing against them.

4-     Were you impressed with the number of college coaches that were in attendance?

I was very surprised at how many college coaches were there. I figured there was going to be a lot, but never that many.

5-     How was your recruiting process after you attended the event?

The Future Games helped me a lot with recruiting. After the event I called some coaches and was able to talk to them. The Future Games gave me a great opportunity for coaches to come and see me play.

6-     Have you participated in any other PBR events?

I have been to several PBR events. Out of all the events I have been to the Future Games has been by far the best.

7-     What was it like playing on Team Alabama?

I loved playing on Team Alabama. I got to meet a bunch of great baseball players from around the state, and compete against the best from other states.

8-     On the first day when you showed up to go through the workout, were you nervous? Why or why not?

I was very nervous when I first got there. There were so many coaches there that you could barely walk around. It really surprised me at first how many people were there.

9-     Would you recommend future players to attend the PBR Future Games? Any advice for them?

I would definitely recommend going to the Future Games. I have never been to any other event like it. It gave me a great opportunity to play in front of hundreds of college coaches. My advice to a future player is that there is no reason to be nervous about it just go out and play.
