2020 Mock Draft

PBR Staff

We're officially less than a month out from the 2020 MLB Draft and the only thing that's certain right now is that it's going to be quite different than what we're used to. With just five rounds, there will only be 160 picks—a drastic decrease from the usual 1,200 or so. We know many high school prospects will end up at college simply because there are fewer rounds and the undrafted free agent bonus is limited to $20,000, but with deferments to the bonus payments and many not being able to play this spring, we may see a big shift toward college selections.

In 2012, there were 188 picks in the top five rounds. Since then, it has ranged from 164-167 picks. The number of picks from four-year programs has mostly been on the rise in that time frame—making up 47 percent of the top five rounds in 2012 to nearly 69 percent in 2019. The only year that number regressed was in 2017 when it was down to about 54 percent from a hair under 60 in 2016.

But a quarantine and extremely short draft won't stop us from trying to forecast the first round. Our resident experts—Nathan Rode, David Seifert and Shooter Hunt—made their own predictions in our first mock draft for 2020. They agreed on the top pick, but it's still early to really match players up with teams and there wasn't a unanimous selection after that.
