AHSAA Roundup: Oak Mountain 1 Hoover 0

PBR Alabama Staff

April 10

Two elite arms, both future Ole Miss Rebels, squared off in a big time pitchers duel.

Oak Mountain got a stellar pitching performance from 2019 Ole Miss signee Jackson Kimbrell, the #17 player in our AL rankings, to defeat Hoover 1-0. The lefty went all 7 innings, allowing just 1 hit and 3 walks while striking out 10. He kept an extremely talented Hoover line up uncomfortable the whole night, mixing 3 pitches for strikes, flashing a sharp slider and showing the ability to run his fastball in on right handed hitters.

Kimbrell’s future teammate at Ole Miss, 2019 RHP Cole Baker, got the ball for the Bucs and showed why he is the 31st best player in our AL rankings. The righty flirted with danger a few times on the night, but used electric stuff to get out of most of the trouble. Baker struggled with command, walking 6 in 6 innings, but struck out 9 and allowed just 3 hits and 1ER.

After 4 and half innings, both teams had combined for just 1 hit. 2019 Wallace St. signee Caleb Ragland led off the bottom of the 5th with a hard single through the left side and moved to 2nd on a walk to the next batter. After a sac bunt, 2019 1B Ryan Reuse delivered what would end up being the decisive blow with a RBI single to center field. Baker responded with a strike out and F7 to limit the damage.

2020 SS Lawrence Hammonds had the only hit for the Bucs on the night, a single that he ripped through the left side of the infield. Ragland had 2 of the Eagles 3 hits and scored their lone run on the RBI single from Reuse. 2019 C Dylan Fraser had a good night at the plate for Oak Mountain, drawing 2 walks and putting down a key sac bunt.
