Friday, March 29

Sweet Water wins a thriller over Calera in extra innings.

Sweet Water walked off Calera 5-4 in extra innings Friday night. Both the Bulldogs and Eagles pitching staffs put together strong performances, with both teams collecting just 6 hits each. Braiden Broussard, the #55 player in our 2020 AL rankings, got the start on the mound for the Bulldogs. He went 3 innings, scattering 3 hits and 3 walks, allowing just 1 ER. 2022 Trace Luker came out of the pen to pick up the W, throwing the final 5 innings. He allowed 3 ER on 2 walks and 3 hits.

2021 RHP Riley Gay got the start for the Eagles. He threw 5 innings, struck out 4, and allowed 4 ER. 2020 RHP Quin’Darius Crews threw well out of the pen, throwing 2 innings, allowing 1 hit and 1 ER.

Calera got on the scoreboard first when SS Elijah Franklin singled, stole two bases, and scored on a very shallow fly out, giving 2020 3B Graham Blankenship an RBI. Sweet Water would tie the game in the bottom of the 4th when 2019 Chance Broussard doubled and came around to score on an RBI ground out by 2022 Michael Cole. The Bulldogs would add two more in the bottom of the 5th when Braiden Broussard scorched a ball in the gap that would end up being a 2 run inside the park home run. The Eagles responded immediately, tying the game at 3 in the top of the 6th on a 2 RBI single by 2022 Matthew Windham.

The tie would not last long, as 2020 Reed Joiner reached on an IF single and advanced to 3rd on an E5 to lead off the bottom of the 6th and would later come around to score on a passed ball. The Eagles started the top of the 7th by loading the bases with 0 outs. After a pop out, Luker got what looked like would be a game ending double play, but an error allowed 1 run to score, and the ball kicked away behind third base, where Chance Broussard picked it up and threw out the would be go ahead run at the plate.

After two quick outs to start the bottom of the 8th, a walk followed by an error put runners on the corners for Braiden Broussard who delivered in a big way. He hit another missile into the LCF gap, scoring Chastain Washington and securing the win for Sweet Water, 5-4.
