OUTLOOK:

The Mustangs of Stanhope Elmore reached the playoffs in 2019, finishing runner up to Wetumpka before losing in the 1st round to Russell County. Coach DK Shuman welcomes back six positional starters and four arms that saw action on the mound in 2019. These returners will mix with some talented young players. ’21 3B/RHP Chase Eddings is physical player (6’3 230 lbs.) that handles the bat well at the plate and has some big-time juice off the barrel. Eddings will also see time on the mound for the Mustangs. Another junior, SS/RHP Cody Simmons is a plus athlete that shows solid defensive actions at shortstop. He also is a nice runner that shows plenty of arm strength across the infield. Simmons will also toe the rubber this year. ’22 1B/LF Conner Gregg is another physical player (6’3 225 lbs.) that should be a run producer in the offensive lineup this season. He can play a couple of different positions and can drive the ball to all fields. A strong core of seniors return as well. One is C/UTIL Caleb Rainwater. He has a quick transfer behind the plate and does a nice job handling the pitching staff. He can play a number of different positions and is also a very good runner. ’20 RHP Josh Wilson is a competitor on the mound and pitches with emotion and wants the ball in the biggest games. Senior OF Sully Stevens is a nice defender in the outfield and runs the bases very well. When Stevens gets on base, the Mustangs usually score. ’20 C/OF Nolan Taylor is a very versatile player that should be an everyday player and should be a major run producer for the offense. He has some power at the plate. Two freshmen to keep an eye on are MIF/RHP Zach Stevens and LHP/OF Colin Woodham. Stevens is a good defender at shortstop and has nice arm strength across the infield and on the mound. Woodham shows nice movement and command on multiple pitches and his velocity is increasing. He is also very comfortable taking the mound in big games.
