AL JUCO Recruiting Breakdown: South Division

Austin Sharp
Director of Scouting

With numerous players in the state of Alabama signing to their respective colleges, our staff wants to take a look and breakdown each team in the South division's recruiting class. JUCO baseball in this state is as good as we have seen it in recent decades, and all signs point to this continuing over the next few years. While most of these players mentioned reside in Alabama, there are a few prospects from other states, including Georgia and Florida. Many of these players have attended PBR events over the past couple of years and are scattered all over the 2021 Player Rankings. These teams will continue to add more players over the next few months from high school commitments, transfer portal, etc., but they are already shaping up to be strong.

Before we start, it is important to note that these breakdowns reflect what college is in the player's profile

Num. of PBR State Ranked Commitments: 1

Commitments:

State Rank Name State Position High School
130 Jaylen Blackmon FL OF Escambia
- Gabe Hunt AL OF Theodore
- Hunter Pierson FL RHP Escambia

OUTLOOK: Bishop State has always been known for bringing in first-year players and developing them very well, and this class already looks to be talented. Blackmon is a bit undersized, but he is an excellent runner and is super twitchy and shows a line-drive approach at the plate. Hunt is another outfielder that will look to jump into the lineup and make an immediate impact during his freshman campaign. Pierson, high school teammate of Blackmon, fills up the zone with all pitches and should log some innings when he gets to Mobile.

State Rank Name State Position High School
35 Jalen Fulwood GA OF Wesleyan
60 Skylar Jones AL RHP Hewitt-Trussville
- J. Henry Hobson FL RHP Bishop Verot

OUTLOOK: The Pirates are always known for signing some of best players the southeast has to offer, and this year's class looks to be much of the same. Leading off the class, Jalen Fulwood brings "elite athleticism" and "game-changing speed" to the table. He is regarded as one of the top bats in the '22 GA class and plays a crisp centerfield defensively. Skylar Jones possesses a lively fastball that can creep into the upper 80's and low 90's on occasions with quality secondary stuff to compliment it. J. Henry Hobson is extremely projectable at 6-foot-5, 190 pounds, and already works in the mid 80's with the fastball with still more to come.

Num. of Commitments: 2

Commitments:

State Rank Name State Position High School
- Braxton Russell AL SS Clay Chalkville
- Ryan West AL 2B Bob Jones

OUTLOOK:
Russell is a very athletic player and will only continue to get better down the road. Shown the ability in the past to hit for extra bases, which will bode well for him in college. West has a really short swing and hits for average well. He will play a big role for 7A powerhouse Bob Jones in 2021. Both are dynamic players that can hold down the middle of the infield in the future.

Num. of Commitments: 6

Num. of PBR State Ranked Commitments: 1

Commitments:

State Rank Name State Position High School
93 Vinnie Bosio AL C St. Paul's Episcopal
- Bryce Eddington AL SS St. Luke's Episcopal
- Mason McBee GA RHP Cartersville
- Collin Morgan LA OF Belle Chassee
- Gavin Orcutt AL 1B Oxford

OUTLOOK: The Sun Chiefs have done an excellent job so far in terms of filling out their 2021 recruiting class with six players committed to come to Bay Minette. Vinnie Bosio is a familiar face that attended the Top Prospect Games, where he displayed some versatility and an impressive overall knowledge for the game behind the plate. McBee will provide some depth on the mound in his first year, while hitters like Eddington and Morgan can handle the bat well and play solid defense. Orcutt can also provide some thump in the Eagles' lineup.

Enterprise State CC

Location: Enterprise, AL

Head Coach: Samuel Frichter

 Website: Enterprise State CC Website

Num. of Commitments: 1

Commitments:

State Rank Name State Position High School
- Nash Evans AL IF/RHP Ariton

OUTLOOK: The Boll Weevils will obviously continue to add signees as the year progresses, but Nash Evans is a great starting point for the class. He brings some two-way potential to his game, as he can play anywhere on the infield and has also been clocked up to 85 mph with the fastball. He should jump right in as a freshman and compete for significant playing time.

Lurleen B. Wallace CC

Location: Andalusia, AL

Head Coach: Steve Helms

Website: Lurleen B. Wallace CC Website

Num. of Commitments: 1

Commitments:

State Rank Name State Position High School
- Tanner Wells AL C Rehobeth

OUTLOOK: Wells recently committed to the Saints a little over a month ago, and will play a big role in the success that Rehobeth HS hopes to have this fall. From the right side, Wells packs some definite pull side pop in that bat and defends well behind the plate. It's a physical frame & he certainly fits the mold of that offensive-minded backstop.

WALLACE-Dothan CC

Location: Dothan, AL

Head Coach: Mackey Sasser

 Website: Wallace-Dothan CC Website

Num. of Commitments: 1

Commitments:

State Rank Name State Position High School
- Brooks Byers FL RHP Spruce Creek

OUTLOOK: Although Byers is the lone commitment for the Govs, he is certainly one of the more talented players on this list. Standing at 6-foot-1, 200 pounds, Byers possesses a live fastball that was clocked up to 87 mph by our PBR Florida Staff in February of 2020, so there is reason to believe that he has added some velocity over the past year. Expect the Govs to add some high-level talent over the next few months, as they always do.
