Alabama Fall Games: Quick Hits

PBR Alabama Staff

MONTEVALLO, AL - The Alabama Fall Games was held on Sunday, August 28th at the University of Montevallo in Montevallo, AL. This event was an open event that consisted of prospects from the 2023-2026 classes. These players went through extended pro-style workout that included batting practice using Trackman and Blast Motion, participated in defensive evaluations, ran the 60 yard-dash using Swift Performance, and much more. Pitchers were able to throw in simulated outings during gameplay and were able to get numbers and metrics off of our Trackman unit, such as pitch velocity, spin rate, horizontal & vertical movement & much more. There were some players who showed up and continued to build off of prior performances, but there were also some new names who jumped onto our radar with a strong showing on Sunday.

Kicking off our post-event coverage for this event, we take a look back at some of the top performers and standouts from Sunday. Continuing over the course of the next week or so, we will release different statistical leaderboards for the event then transition into releasing individual scouting reports for each player in attendance.

SS Carson Wideman (Hewitt-Trussville, 2024)
Uncommitted. 6-foot-2, 175-pounds. Arguably one of the biggest winners from the event, the junior showcased his ability in multiple facets after a strong spring starting at shortstop as a sophomore for one of the top programs in the state. Wideman started off showcasing a professional approach at the plate with firm contact back up the middle during BP, producing low-90 EV's in the process. With a simple setup from the right side, the junior showed quality feel and control for the barrel and some bat speed, as well. Reliable defender up the middle with low-80's arm strength across the diamond. Good one to follow.

OF Ian Cartwright (Alexandria, 2024)
Uncommitted. 6-foot-0, 170-pounds. A top-100 prospect in the junior class, Cartwright continues to build off of prior performances with another solid showing at yesterday's event. Nearly at the top of most leaderboards, the junior possesses some intriguing tools across the board that make him an interesting prospect to follow over the next couple years. Cartwright looks to lift and drive the ball the pull-side gap offensively with above average bat speed that produced a top exit velocity at 97.6 mph. A previous sub-7.0 runner, the outfielder attacks the ball in the outfield and posted the top outfield velocity at 87 mph.

3B Aaron Bailey (McAdory, 2026)
6-foot-1, 175-pounds. Although young in his years, the current freshman has plenty of impressive tools currently that makes him a must-follow in the class. Continuing to show well in each look after a standout showing at this summer's Rising Stars ID, Bailey has physicality in his frame and gives way to plenty of pull-side pop that he showed during his round of BP. Starting slightly open in his stance, Bailey gets back square and fires a quick barrel through the zone that found hard contact throughout, producing numerous low-90 EV's. Tied for the best infield velocity at 86 mph, as well.

C/OF Zackary Johnson (Bob Jones, 2025)
5-foot-11, 180-pounds. After creating some buzz this summer, Johnson showed well at his first event yesterday with plenty to build off of in the future. An offense-first prospect, Johnson caught the attention of many with his round of BP showing a gap-to-gap approach with power potential from the right side. With strength throughout his frame, Johnson utilizes his lower-half well in his swing and has above average bat speed for his age. In an event with many upperclassmen, Johnson posted the third-best exit velocity at 96.1 mph and the fourth-best max distance at 351 ft.

RHP Ian Herrington (West Lauderdale, 2024)
Uncommitted. 6-foot-4, 190-pounds. An imposing prospect with a lean and long-limbed frame, Herrington located a two-pitch mix for strikes in his efficient outing yesterday. Coming out of an over-the-top slot, the junior right-hander consistently worked at 86-88 mph with his fastball that carried plane well through the zone. Herrington also mixed in a 66-70 mph breaking ball with mostly 11-5 shape, and will only become more of a swing-and-miss secondary offering as he continues to garner more feel for spin in the future.

SS/RHP Austin Uptain (Athens, 2024)
Uncommitted. 6-foot-0, 155-pounds. An athletic prospect who displayed some two-way ability yesterday with some upside on the mound. Starting off his day during the workout, the junior lined balls to the pull-side during his round of BP using quick stroke from the left side and showing the ability to flick the barrel through the zone. Also a quality defender up the middle, posting an event-best infield velocity at 86 mph. He also hopped on the mound and was equally impressive, touching 86 mph with some life to his fastball. Uptain paired that with a gradual 11-5 breaking ball in the low-70's.

LHP Colton Sampson (Russell County, 2024)
Uncommitted. 6-foot-3, 200-pounds. Strong and athletic body with proportional strength. The junior southpaw pounded the zone in his one inning of work yesterday, working his fastball in the low-80's with some arm-side run. Sampson also mixed in a sharp slider at 70 mph and showed the ability to locate it to the back door and back foot while facing right-handed hitters. Changeup also worked well off of his fastball in the low-70's, getting fade with ability to kill spin. Also ran a 6.80 60 YD during the workout.

RHP Zachary Wyatt (Thompson, 2023)
Uncommitted. 6-foot-0, 150-pounds. The senior right-hander was a pleasant surprise at yesterday's event showing high metrics on all of his pitches in his lone inning of work. Using a quick arm coming out of a high 3/4 arm slot, Wyatt worked right at 85-86 mph (2590rpm) getting carry and arm-side run through the zone in the process. Using two distinctly different breaking balls, Wyatt showed a 72-73 mph (2747rpm max; 2688rpm avg) breaking ball and a 74-76 mph (2798rpm max; 2689rpm avg) slider with both getting swings-and-misses in the process. Intriguing uncommitted right-hander in the senior class.
