The Spartans of Coach Brett Boutwell enter the 2019 season with high expectations returning 8 starters (and 6 pitchers) from an area championship team in 2018. The Spartans are in 6A Area 1 with Faith Academy, giving the area two of the top teams in the south in 6A, as they join B.C. Rain and Blount to complete the area. The Spartans have 11 seniors that have signed their name on the dotted line to play collegiate baseball after the 2019 season, and they have some other names that will factor into their plans this year as well. The seniors that Coach Boutwell will be depending on heavily are: C Michael Milner (University of West Alabama), IF Dylan McFarland (Milsaps College), C/1B Trenton Brannan (Coastal Alabama- South), OF Mac Boutwell (Coastal Alabama- North), IF Ty Bunch (Coastal Alabama- North), OF Jackson Sikes (Coastal Alabama- North), RHP T.J. Kervin (Coastal Alabama- North), RHP Laiten Hudson (Gulf Coast CC), RHP Joe Joe McDonald (Covenant College), RHP Levi Clark (LB Wallace CC), LHP Konner Copeland (East Mississippi CC), RHP Tarrus Garrett and OF Braxtin Hughes. Clark (#22), Copeland (#54) and Hudson (#68) are ranked in the state 2019 class. A couple of physical 2020 RHP/OF’s to keep an eye on are Treyce Byrd (ranked #48 in the 2020 state class) and Jacob Wright, and the infield should be bolstered by a couple of 2021’s in SS/2B Coby Holmes and 3B/SS Cade Easterbrook. The Spartans are looking to make a deep run in the state playoffs and their area matchups vs. Faith Academy will be interesting to watch.
