Alabama High School Team Preview: Saraland Spartans

PBR Alabama Staff

The 2021 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. That excitement may be at an all- time high entering this high school season as the 2020 high school baseball season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season during an offseason unlike any other and as always, there are some very talented players and teams across Alabama.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Montgomery at the AISA or AHSAA state championships but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Alabama. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing our scheduled podcasts and releasing our preseason Top 10 in each AHSAA classification.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.

Outlook:

Saraland has grown accustomed to winning and the 2021 team has a chance to fall right in that mold. Area starting pitching should be a strength as the Spartans will look for some unproven arms to step in and help as well. Senior Cade Easterbrook (Northwest Florida State signee) will be heavily depended on as a shortstop and pitcher. He is a 2 year starter and will be a go to guy on mound and hit in top of lineup. Has shows some serious juice from the left side. Senior middle infielder Coby Homes is an East Mississippi CC signee. The switch hitter is also a two year starter that handles the bat well and is a superb baserunner. Junior OF/RHP CT Englebert is a 2 year starter and will hit in the middle of the lineup. He shows nice power at the plate and is a hard nosed player. Senior 3B/UTL Kline Smith is also a 2 year returning starter. Smith is a very smart player with a nice understanding of the game. He also brings a sense of toughness to the team. 6 foot, 190 pound senior outfielder Braxtin Hughes has some vesatility to his game and he shows some legit power while also being a very good runner. Another senior that brings a toughness mindset to the team is 1B/3B Karson Green. The 6 foot, 200 pounder was also QB1 for the Spartans on the gridiron this fall and has received some offers for football. He should be a valuable member on the team this season. A few other junior players top keep an eye on are RHP/OF Trevor Pope and C/INF Mathew Milner. Pope has a solid build at 6'3 195 lbs. and shows nice athleticism in the outfield, and should also log some inning on the mound. Milner returns after starting multiple games a year ago as a sophomore.  Some names to remember this year and over the next few years are:

2023 LHP Bryson Goff: The 6’3 205 pound sophomore was in the starting rotation as a freshman and should pitch some big innings this year.

2024 SS/RHP Cam Warren: True two way guy that shows nice power to the pullside and can jump on the mound and feature a low 80's fastball.

2024 RHP/3B Evan Hillard: He is another young legitimate two way talent that the Spartans will depend on this year and into the future.

As usual, look for the Spartans to have their fare share of success this spring.
