Alabama High School Team Preview: Robertsdale Bears

PBR Alabama Staff

The 2021 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. That excitement may be at an all-time high entering this high school season as the 2020 high school baseball season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season during an offseason unlike any other and as always, there are some very talented players and teams across Alabama.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Montgomery at the AISA or AHSAA state championships but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Alabama. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing our scheduled podcasts and releasing our preseason Top 10 in each AHSAA classification.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.

Outlook:

The Roberstdale Bears has a long history of success on the baseball field and 2021 could be more of the same as they do battle in an extremely tough 6A Area 2. Early in the year the Bears will be looking to get some inexperienced pitchers acclimated to the varsity level and will depend on their offesnise firepower. Junior OF Aiden Macks is definitely one of those big bats in the lineup as he shows legit power while also being a very good runner. In the shortened 2020 season, Macks hit 4 homeruns and hit over .400 and the Bears hope this carries over to the 2021 season. Another junior that hit over .400 during the shortened 2020 season is 3B/RHP Kobe Wiggins. Wiggins has a very solid frame and has worked extremely hard iin the weight room. On the mound he also features a mid to upper 80's fastball with a solid slider and changeup. Wiggins will definitely be counted on in a two way role this season. Junior C Sage Givens (5'9 180 lbs.) is back in 2021 and is a very solid receiver behind the plate. In addition to handling the Bears pitching staff, Givens will be counted on to be a middle of the order bat. Yet another 2022 grad that will be a key to any success this season is SS Jay Racine. The slick fielding middle infielder will move from 2B to SS this season. Last year he got hot with the bat right before the season was cancelled and the Bears hope that carries over to the 2021 season. Two youngsters to keep an eye on this season are sophomore 1B Brayden Douglas and LHP Cole Bolton-Waites. Douglas is a 6'1 185 pounder that moves well around the bag and has a very mature approach and solid swing at the plate. Bolton-Waites is a quality left handed arm that will be counted on to step in and provide some depth in the pitching staff. If the Bears can find the pitching depth they are looking for they will be in the thick of the very difficult 6A Area 2 race.
