Alabama High School Team Preview: Lexington Golden Bears

PBR Alabama Staff

The 2021 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. That excitement may be at an all-time high entering this high school season as the 2020 high school baseball season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season during an offseason unlike any other and as always, there are some very talented players and teams across Alabama.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Montgomery at the AISA or AHSAA state championships but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Alabama. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing our scheduled podcasts and releasing our preseason Top 10 in each AHSAA classification.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.

Classification: AHSAA 2A Area 16

Positional Starters Returning: 7

Top Returning Players:

2021 RHP/3B Ethan Corum

2021 RHP/INF Kyle Davis

2022 RHP/3B Caleb Putman

2022 LHP/OF Jack Traffanstedt

Top 2023 Prospect:

2023 RHP/SS Cade Moore

Outlook:

There is a wealth of experience back in 2021 as the Golden Bears return 7 positional starters and 7 pitchers from a year ago. That bodes well as they try to make a deep run in the 2A state playoffs. Senior RHP/3B Ethan Corum will definitely pitch a ton of big innings in 2021 as he features a mid to upper 80's fastball and his secondary stuff is developing. Corum will also provide a big bat in the middle of the order as he returns after hitting 2 HR's a year ago before the shutdown. Another senior that will be counted on heavily is RHP/INF Kyle Davis. The 6'3 165 pounder is a quality arm and has tons of experience in big situations on the mound. He will also possibly play some middle infield this year, in addition to 1st base. Junior Caleb Putman is another returner that brings some physicality to the team at 5'10 205 pounds. The RHP/3B really controls the barrel and has some major juice in the batters box. Another junior that returns after a successful sophomore campaign is LHP/OF Jack Traffanstedt. The southpaw logged a lot of innings in relief last year while also hitting over .300. He is an athletic player that does a nice job chasing balls down in the outfield. Sophomore RHP/SS Cade Moore is a quick-twitch SS with the ability to make plays to both sides showing a fluid glove and footwork. Offensively he is a middle of the lineup guy who does a nice staying gap to gap. There is plenty of reason for optimism in 2021 for the Golden Bears.
