Alabama High School Team Preview: Westbrook Christian Warriors

PBR Alabama Staff

The 2022 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Alabama.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Montgomery at the AISA or AHSAA state championships, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Alabama. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing our scheduled podcasts and releasing our preseason Top 10 in each AHSAA classification.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our players of the week, updating the Top 10 in each AHSAA classification as well as a Power 25. One thing that you especially don’t want to miss are our scheduled podcasts with guests from across the state as well as recaps and previews of big games across the state.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.

Team Outlook

The Westbrook Christian Warriors enjoyed a historic 2021 season that saw them defeat GW Long in three games to win the Class 2A State Championship. It truly was an excellent season for the Warriors, and they're itching to get back to the finals in 2021 with a fairly new roster with new faces in the starting lineup.

The Warriors rode the success of a bunch of talented upperclassmen last spring, and a few of those return in 2022 highly motivated. RHP/1B Brodie Self was one of those starters who played a vital role for Westbrook Christian last spring, as he pitched the Warriors to a complete game in Game 3 of the finals. He has the most experience out of anyone on the team, and will be a middle-of-the-order hitter and one of the top pitchers in the rotation. UTL/RHP Dalton Grace is the second starter from the Warriors' lineup that comes back this spring. Grace recorded some big hits throughout the playoffs, and will play a two-way role as one of the better hitters and pitchers for this team. SS/RHP Hugh Windle will also be a key piece for the Warriors in 2022. Windle has a smooth swing from the right side and is a sure-handed defender up the middle. INF/RHP Clark Hodnett & OF/LHP William Chambers are a pair of seniors who are eager to make an immediate impact this spring. Hodnett is a good defender and runner, while Chambers should be a quality left-handed hitter and pitcher for the Warriors. Another senior to watch for this spring will be C/1B Jackson Bryant, who can really control the opposing team's running game and has a high baseball IQ and gap-to-gap power at the plate.

The Warriors had a memorable season in 2021 that resulted in a Class 2A State Championship, and this team has a chance to be a really competitive squad once again in 2022. They did lose a good bit of players to graduation, but it looks like there are more than enough pieces to make another run throughout the playoffs this spring.
