East Coast Sox Scout Day Preview: Outfielders

Austin Sharp
Director of Scouting

We are excited to kick off the 2020 summer season with the East Coast Sox Scout Day, one of the premier travel ball organizations in the country. This event was originally scheduled to take place at Shelton State CC in Tuscaloosa, AL, but was recently changed to Q.V. Sykes Park in Meridian, Mississippi. The event will be one of our biggest to date, as there will roughly be 50 players in each session. Be sure to follow along on our Twitter (@PBR_Alabama) for pre-event, during the event, and post-event coverage. Scroll down to the bottom of the page to check out the itinerary for June 4th.

Prep Baseball Report is committed to providing a safe environment for all players and PBR staff in attendance. Social distancing and other guidelines will be followed strictly and thoroughly. Each player will have their own “safe zone” that will be six feet apart from each other. Dugouts will not be used and there will be numerous hand sanitizing stations throughout the complex and on the field.

Today, we want to take a look at some of the top primary outfielders that will be in attendance at the East Coast Sox Scout Day. This group is composed of players from Alabama, Tennessee, and Mississippi. Two of these players below are already committed to power SEC programs. In addition to these, we are certain there will be other talented outfielders on hand.

Primary Outfielders:

’21 OF/3B Carson Chavies, Collierville (TN)

Attended the 2019 PBR Future Games with Team Tennessee. The 5-foot-11, 155-pound switch-hitting outfielder was a production machine at the plate all weekend. In game action, Chavies went 2 for 3 (2 1B/ 3 BB/ 1 SF) w/ 6 quality at bats in 7 plate appearances.  He also added a stolen base and an RBI to the stat sheet.  During the showcase, posted a top five 60 time for Team Tennessee and showed a nearly identical stroke from both the left and right sides of the dish.  Line drive power w/ developing gap to gap as he adds to frame. Defensively, played all three OF positions w/ good range and solid arm.  Profile projects as switch-hitting table setter CF/LF w/ above average speed and arm.

PBR TN Ranking: #72

’22 OF/LHP Cy Craig, Jackson Prep (MS)

Attended the Preseason Prospect ID in 2019 and took an impressive round of BP for his size and age as he was on the barrel for his entire round launching ball hard to the pull side. Also shows promise on the mound with clean mechanics and an easy delivery. Will be interesting to see how much he has progressed over the past year.

PBR MS Ranking: #36

‘23 OF/LHP Seth Farni, UMS-Wright

Attended the 2019 PBR Future Games with Team Mississippi. Has plus power from both sides of the plate with 87 mph exit velocity from the right and 86 from the left. Exhibited same power in BP and game action in the JFG. Great defensive instincts in the outfield, proved to get great jumps on the baseball.

Commitment: Ole Miss

PBR AL Ranking: #7

’22 OF/RHP Alex Wade, Madison Academy

At the plate, he continues to impress with his gap to gap power. Shows a tall, slightly open stance and has nice rhythm in the load. The hands have some quickness and he does a nice job of getting his back side through with the barrel. The swing path shows some tilt and he has carry off the barrel all over the field (97 mph exit velocity). In the OF there are no questions on defense as he can cover a ton of ground in the OF and the arm strength is there as he had the highest OF velocity (87 mph) at the event. Tall, lanky RHP that works from a low ¾ slot and shows some whip in the arm action. The FB showed nice arm side action and had spin rates in the low 1900’s to low 2000’s that was up to 83 MPH. The pitch showed sink and seemed “heavy”. The breaking ball was mid 70’s (low 2100 spin rates)  with slider action and the change up showed deception with tumble at 74-75 mph. Did a nice job of locating pitches his arm side.

Commitment: Auburn

PBR AL Ranking: #1

’22 OF/1B McKinley Gieger, Oak Grove (MS)

5-foot-10, 150-pound  athletic frame. In the box, the left-handed hitters best exit velocity was 82 mph. Starts in an athletic open  stance with a smooth load, then uses a short stride before his swing. Shows a flat swing plane, as well as quick bat speed and high finish. Gap to gap approach. Recorded an outfield position velocity of 76 mph; has athletic footwork and a clean exchange. Showed athletic movements laterally and fielded with ball out front. Showed a loose arm action with an-over-the-top slot. He performed well in the 60-yard dash, clocking a speedy time of 6.88.

PBR MS Ranking: #32

’23 OF/1B Eli Ramsey, Tipton Rosemark (TN)

6-foot-3, 175 pound, athletic player. Smooth stroke from the left side, gap to gap approach. Line drive during batting practice. Tons of projection left for the ‘23 grad and already looks the part at the plate. Short, compact swing. 86 mph exit velo in September of 2019. Average runner, 7.38 60. Moves well at both 1st base and in the outfield. Average to above average arm, 79 mph IF velo and 80 mph OF velo in September of 2019.

PBR TN Ranking: T30 (TN Rankings are being updated)
