Prep Baseball Report's IA's Prospect I.D.- Monticello event took place on Sunday, March 4, 2018. The event was held at the Eastern IA Sports Facility in Monticello, IA. The event featured prospects from the 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 classes.

PITCHER EVALUATIONS

Braden Albert, LHP, Cedar Rapids Xavier, 2019
5-foot-10, 145-pound left-handed pitcher. Projectable left-handed arm that will make jump into 2019 rankings. Works primarily out of strength, slight crouch into balance point, lands with front foot closed and has direction to plate. Clean compact arm with quickness producing 83-86 mph fastballs, late cut action, and thrown consistently for strikes. Curveball has 1/7 shape with late sharp break; showing ability to back-foot RHH. Changeup has similar cut action as fastball; with above avg. fade. Not previously known to PBR; Albert has intriguing upside on the mound and will be followed closely going into the summer. 

Zach Barden, OF/RHP, Cedar Rapids Prairie, 2020
6-foot-2, 165-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.41 home-to-first time. Narrow open stance, strides into contact, flat bat path, flashes of solid line drive pop, mid/pull approach, 86 mph exit velocity. Avg. actions in field, tends to sit back on ground balls, pie arm action, elevated throws to target, 78 mph arm from outfield. On mound; stretch only, athletic tuck and turn with high balance point, short arm action, lands inline to catcher, slightly upright on release. Fastball was straight for strikes at 78-79 mph. Above avg. breaking ball with late sharp break. Shows fade with late sinking action on changeup; working bottom of zone well.

Chase Becker, RHP/SS, Cedar Rapids Kennedy, 2021
6-foot-3, 180-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Tall lean prospect in 2021 class with athleticism. On mound; uptempo into high balance point, slight drop and drive, shows rhythm and athleticism in delivery, lands inline to catcher, clean compact arm action with extension to plate. Fastball was consistently 84-85 mph with solid feel for strike zone. Breaking ball command was inconsistent but shows above avg. action with tight spin, sharp break, and above avg. depth. Has late arm-side sink and fade on changeup with solid feel for zone. 4.85 home-to-first time. Crouched stance, wide base, lift in swing plane, pull approach, aggressive swinger, shows solid bat speed with pop in bat, 89 mph exit velocity. Above avg. feet and actions for age, works though ball, sure hands, plays with energy, and has above avg. arm to bag, 82 mph arm across infield.

Michael Biertzer, RHP/OF, Linn-Marr, 2020
6-foot-2, 175-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; stretch only, slightly crouched over rubber, tends to break hands early, slight pie arm action, lands towards third base side throwing across body to plate. Fastball was 75-77 mph with straight action to plate. Changeup has avg./solid fade for strikes. Breaking ball has slider shape and tilt in zone. 5.12 home-to-first time. Closed stance, slices through contact, short finish and lacks extension through contact, 84 mph exit velocity. Raw actions in field, loses momentum when fielding, avg. arm action on throws, 73 mph arm from outfield.

Zach Burtch, OF/RHP, Ottumwa, 2019
6-foot, 165-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.77 home-to-first time. Line drive swing plane, choppy leg kick trigger, inconsistent timing, spray contact, pull approach, 77 mph exit velocity. Long arm action, raw fielding mechanics, lacks direction on throws, 73 mph arm from outfield. Decent athlete that should improve with development. On mound; deep rocker step into uncontrolled balance point, collapse on back leg, lands inline to catcher, upright on release. Fastball was 74-76 mph with slight running action. Shows feel for changeup, consistent strikes, firm velocity with running action. Split showed arm-side run on flat plane.

Chase Calderwood, OF/LHP, North Liberty, 2019
5-foot-9, 170-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.69 home-to-first time. Shows balance in box with rhythm, simple swing, repeats well, consistent hard contact, gap to gap approach producing solid ground balls and line drives, 84 mph exit velocity. Active feet with sure hands in field, works around and through, profiles as left-fielder or center-fielder if run times improve, 75 mph arm strength from outfield. On mound; controlled tempo into short balance point, 2-piece arm action with long stab on back-side. Works up and over front side with varying release points. Fastball was 72-74 mph with flat action to plate. Small break and inconsistent shape on curveball at 66-69 mph. Wobbly spin and action on changeup.

Jakob Coghlan, LHP, Marion, 2019
5-foot-10, 155-pound left-handed pitcher. Young looking junior. Shows rhythm and tempo in delivery. Small side step into athletic balance point, longer arm stroke, close to pie arm action, tends to be underneath at release. Fastball was 69-72 mph with early running action to plate. Slows arm on breaking ball creating loose spin with early break. Changeup is flat currently; but should continue to develop with relatively clean arm action.

Ben DeTaeye, LHP/OF, WDM Valley, 2019
5-foot-11, 150-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. #62 ranked player in Iowa 2019 class. On mound; lean lanky frame, rolls into shorter balance point, long arm action, delivers from ¾ slot, with hand quickness. Fastball has late running action at 79-82 mph; touching 83 mph for strikes. Slider was 71-72 mph thrown with good hand speed producing tight rotation and late break. Splitter is solid/avg. pitch with decent arm-side sink and depth.  4.51 home-to-first time. Body load, hands are stagnant at times, clean path through contact, middle/away approach, consistent solid contact producing line drives and ground balls, 83 mph exit velocity. Solid athlete in field, works around and through baseball, fields cleanly, has long action showing accuracy and carry to target, 86 mph arm from outfield.

Edison Goodlow, LHP, Albia, 2019
6-foot-3, 170-pound left-handed pitcher. Tall athletic frame. Has rhythm and tempo to delivery, lands inline with catcher and has extension to plate. Arm starts long and becomes compact through arm swing. Fastball was 76-78 mph with late arm-side life flashing above avg. running action. Lands slider well for strikes with sweeping action to plate. Slight down action on changeup working bottom of zone. Follow in 2019 class with projectable frame and solid mechanics/ arm action.

Isaiah Henrichs, LHP/1B, Carlisle, 2019
5-foot-9, 200-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; strong jump on mound from 80-81 mph up to 84-86 mph currently. Strong sturdy build with thick lower half, controlled side-step into balance point, gains tempo through delivery, compact arm action, ¾ slot, with flashes of arm speed. Fastball was 84-86 mph with arm-side life; seems to jump on hitter late. 1/7 breaking is thrown with above avg. arm speed and has late sharp break for strikes. Solid arm-side run and sink on changeup. 4.9 home-to-first time. Shoulder load, narrow base, tends to spin through contact, strong at contact, shows pop in bat, pull side approach, 89 mph exit velocity. Sure hands and confident fielder, works through ball, solid footwork and actions around bag, 78 mph arm across infield. Currently un-ranked; Henrichs will make significant jump into Iowa 2019 rankings.

Kolten Hinrichsen, RHP, Washington, 2019
5-foot-10, 165-pound right-handed pitcher. Short turn into balance point, has body control, gathers over rubber, with good direction to plate. Compact arm action from OT slot. Works fastball on slight downhill plane at 79-80 mph for strikes. Curveball was 66-68 mph with solid depth and down action. Slider was 67-68 mph with late cutting action. Changeup is above avg. with late run and sink.

Jacob Iseminger, 1B/LHP, Panorama, 2019
6-foot-3, 305-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 5.6 home-to-first time. Simple swing, hands hover over plate, loses balance occasionally in swing, fly ball hitter, present strength, and has solid pop in bat, 84 mph exit velocity. Decent hands, works to get to short hop, large target at bag, solid footwork and receives throws well, 70 mph arm strength across field. On mound; controlled to balance point, drops glove side early throwing all arm, lands inline with catcher and is upright at release. Fastball was 69-71 mph with avg. cut action to plate. Early break and loose spin on curveball- 1/7 shape. Changeup is firm with flat action. 

Cole Kraber, OF/RHP, Oskaloosa, 2019
6-foot-1, 178-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.7 home-to-first time. Square stance, front heel turn trigger, shows loose hands with extension through contact, solid line drives and works middle of field, 80 mph exit velocity. Aggressive fielder, plays with energy, raw arm action but shows carry and accuracy to bag, 84 mph arm strength from outfield. On mound; rocker step into tuck and turn balance point, picks up tempo through delivery, lands on heel interrupting rhythm, stiff shouldered delivery from OT slot, some effort and head-whack on release. Fastball was heavy in bottom of zone at 76-78 mph. Split had knuckle action with solid arm-side drop. Breaking ball has avg. spin and depth with 11/5 shape.

Merritt McCardle, SS/RHP, 2019
6-foot-1, 170-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.53 home-to-first time. Slight crouch, athletic actions in box, creates bat speed, pull approach, produces fly balls to gap with pop in bat, 86 mph exit velocity. Raw actions in field, tends to stop to field, loses momentum and direction to bag creating accuracy issues, athletic enough and should continue to develop in field, 75 mph arm strength across infield. On mound; uptempo delivery into crouched balance point, simple approach, strides down mound landing slightly closed. Has extension to plate with drop and drive delivery. Compact arm action with flashes of hand quickness. Fastball was 76-78 mph with ability to locate to both sides of plate. Slurvy breaking ball with 10/4 shape. Firm changeup with slight running action.

Chase McDole, RHP, Washington, 2019
5-foot-11, 155-pound right-handed pitcher. Lean athletic frame. Has rhythm and tempo in delivery, side-step into balance point, low glove side, clean compact arm action, with extension and finish to plate. Sinker/slider type pitcher who threw 74-76 mph with late arm-side running action. Slurvy breaking ball with with flashes of tight spin and late break. Changeup is avg. currently with flat action to plate.

Adam Metivier, SS/RHP, Davenport Assumption, 2019
5-foot-11, 150-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.4 home-to-first time. Open stance, active hand load, twitchy actions, shows bat speed, hard pull contact, line drive and ground ball production, 83 mph exit velocity. Works around and through baseball, solid actions, sure hands, follows throws across, with quick release, 77 mph arm across infield. On mound; deeper rocker step into uptempo balance point, lands slightly open to plate, with short arm action. Fastball was straight, thrown for strikes, at 78-82 mph. 11/5 shape on slurvy breaking ball that had flashes of tight spin. Solid fade with above avg. running action on changeup. 

Quinn Morris, LHP, Muscatine, 2018
6-foot-5, 250-pound left-handed pitcher. Large physical frame. Kaskaskia CC commit. Side-step into medium athletic balance point, creates rhythm in hand movement through delivery, lands inline to catcher, has some extension to plate. Compact arm action when stays connected. At times will leak down mound early leaving arm well behind body. Fastball was 79-82 mph; thrown on a tilted plane to hitter. Tighter spin and slider shape on breaking ball at 68-71 mph. Cut action on changeup, firm, thrown at 76-77 mph. Physical frame on mound; interesting follow at Juco with instruction and continued development.

Alec Nigut, OF/1B/LHP, Des Moines Roosevelt, 2020
6-foot, 175-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.68 home-to-first time. Double tap trigger, creates linear direction, clean bat path, barrels ball consistently to both gaps, shows ability at the plate, 88 mph exit velocity. Works through ball in outfield, has body control, solid carry and accuracy on throws, 81 mph arm from outfield. Sure hands at first base, moves around bag well, confident fielder, 78 mph arm across infield. On mound; controlled rocker step into higher crouched balance point, hides ball from hitter, delivers from OT slot, with easy effort on release. Fastball was 81-83 mph delivered on steeper downhill plane. Breaking ball is thrown close to fastball arm speed with solid 12/6 shape and depth. Shows feel for changeup to arm-side of plate with flashes of late run and sink.

Lucas Olson, RHP/2B, Carlisle, 2019
5-foot-10, 150-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; deeper rocker step into short balance point, leaks down mound early occasionally, lands closed with direction to plate, compact arm action with appropriate extension and finish. Fastball was 75-78 mph with straight action to plate. Breaking ball was close to 12/6 shape with down action and avg. depth. Solid sink and fade on changeup. 5.14 home-to-first time. Square stance, longer stride, lays bat down creating flat bat path, avg. pop, consistent solid contact, 79 mph exit velocity. Works low to ground, fields out front, quick release on throws solid actions, 74 mph arm strength across infield.

Dylan Page, C/RHP, Linn-Mar, 2021
6-foot-1, 185-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. 5.3 home-to-first time. Square stance, balanced through swing, leg kick trigger, pull approach, line drive contact, clean path through baseball, 76 mph exit velocity. 69 mph arm strength with 2.31-2.4 pop times. Wide base behind plate, quiet receiver, solid blocking ability, short arm action, avg. footwork on throws, avg. accuracy to bag. On mound; wide stance, travels across rubber, gathers into slight tuck and turn balance point. Slight uncontrolled front leg landing across body in delivery. One-piece arm action from high ¾ slot producing 74-76 mph fastballs. Loose spin on curveball at 63-66 mph. Heavy action on changeup with run and sink.

Noah Van Veldhuizen, RHP/3B, Oskaloosa, 2020
6-foot-2, 205-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; side-step into tuck and turn balance point, swings down mound and lands with open front foot to plate, compact arm action, with some extension to plate. Fastball was 82-84 mph with delivered on flat plane with straight action. Curveball has tight rotation with 11/5 shape; showing late break. Avg. feel for changeup with flat action to plate. Split was thrown at 67-68 mph with solid down action. 4.76 home-to-first time. Closed stance, strides to square, lower hand slot, works up through baseball, has present strength, flashes pop in bat, 93 mph exit velocity. Moves flat footed with heavier feet, sure hands, plays tall at position, has carry and accuracy to bag, 80 mph arm across infield. 

Lucas Walker, LHP/OF, Solon, 2020
5-foot-11, 160-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; rocker step into balance point, slightly uncontrolled, swings down mound and lands open to plate, hitchy arm action on backside, and is clean out front with extension. Fastball was 76-78 mph with straight action to plate. 12/6 shape on breaking ball with avg. depth. Flashes of late run and sink on changeup. 4.66 home-to-first time. Slight body load, tends to spin off at contact, produces spray contact- flashes of hard line drives to pull side, 83 mph exit velocity. Average actions in field, tends to sit back and field underneath, short arm action, 77 mph arm strength from outfield.

Jonah Warren, RHP, Liberty, 2020
5-foot-10, 170-pound right-handed pitcher. Strong sturdy frame. Side-step, travels across rubber, battles posture over rubber occasionally, higher leg kick, gathers and works down mound inline with catcher. Short arm action producing solid life on 79-80 mph fastball for strikes. Curveball has 12/6 shape with avg. depth and spin. Changeup is currently flat with minimal action; thrown hard.
