PBR Future Games: Alabama Day 2 Recap

Austin Sharp
Alabama Scouting Director

EMERSON, GA - The PBR Future Games continued on Thursday with all teams competing against other various states after participating in a pro-style workout yesterday. In front of hundreds of college recruiters looking for prospects at LakePoint Sports in Emerson, GA, Team Alabama took their first game of the week over Team Arizona by score of 11-5 using a steady offensive performance from multiple contributors. Pitcher-only's threw two innings each in a seven-inning contest and showcased some intriguing stuff in the process. Two-way players will throw an inning each on their scheduled day to pitch.

Team Alabama will be back in action tomorrow against Team Canada at 12:30 PM EST on Field 9 looking to go 2-0 on the week. Before we shift our focus to tomorrow, let's take a look back at some of the standouts from today's contest for Team Alabama.

Carter Johnson SS / RHP / Oxford , AL / 2024

After being one of the standouts from yesterday's workout and being mentioned in Shooter Hunt's Quick Hits article, Johnson continued to show as one of the top prospects at the event with a pair of hits in gameplay for Team Alabama. Listed at 6-foot-2, 175-pounds with lean athleticism and projection, Johnson was on the barrel in all three at-bats with all three registering in the mid-90's off the bat. In Team Alabama's impressive offensive performance, Johnson went 2-for-3 with a double, single and a walk while playing crisp defensive up the middle. A must-follow for any college recruiter throughout the rest of the week.

Connor Gatwood RHP / SS / Baker, AL / 2024

Gatwood got the starting nod for Team Alabama and really found his stuff later in his outing after a pair of walks to open up his outing. Standing a lean, projectable, 6-foot-4, 180-pounds, Gatwood is a natural athlete on the mound showing feel for a three-pitch arsenal. The uncommitted right-hander was able to work around the 87-89 mph range while occasionally touching 90 mph and held it for the duration of his short outing. He featured a hard slider in the low-80's that showed some bite and potential for swing-and-miss, while also mixing in a quality changeup with fading action. Intriguing arm that should continue to carry more velocity as he continues to grow into his frame.

Riley Miller OF / RHP / Athens, AL / 2024

Miller served as a primary run-producer this morning for Team Alabama going 2-for-3 with a pair of singles and four RBI's. The uncommitted outfielder was another prospect for Team Alabama that was near the top of almost every statistical category during the pro-style workout on Wednesday. Standing an athletic 6-foot-0, 180-pounds, Miller possesses some twitch hitting in the right side of the box with intriguing power that consistently registers mid-90 EV's and a top at 99.2 mph. He was also able to show off a couple other tools in the workout, running a 6.80 60 YD and registering an 89 mph OF velocity on throws to the plate. Another good one to follow for Team Alabama throughout the rest of the week.

Brendan Conner RHP / 3B / Corner, AL / 2024

Conner tossed the 5th and 6th innings for Team Alabama and looked really sharp in his outing while inducing weak contact and showing solid command of his two-pitch arsenal. Solidly-built at 6-foot-0, 205-pounds, Conner has a very strong lower-half with a workhorse-type demeanor. Filling up the zone with both pitches, Conner worked consistently at 86-88 mph and touched 89 mph a couple of times with a heavy feel and glove-side command. He also ripped off some quality sliders with late, downward shape to it in the mid-70's. Pairing that with the fastball, he was able to generate some swings-and-misses with the pitch thanks to some tunneling action when located down in the zone.

Mason McCraine LHP / Glenwood , AL / 2025

McCraine was able to work a much cleaner second frame for Team Alabama showing command of a three-pitch mix that should only continue to get better as he continues to develop and grow into his long 6-foot-4, 185-pound frame. Standing on the mound with a long-limbed frame, McCraine certainly looks the part of a future frontline arm at the next level with a fastball that worked up to 86 mph and looked a bit quicker coming out of an over-the-top arm slot. The southpaw also dropped in some quality breaking balls showing some gradual shape and bigger break. Showed the ability to turn over a few changeups in the upper-70's that killed spin. Intriguing rising sophomore with quality stuff and projectable frame.

Damien Gatson OF / Mobile Christian, AL / 2025

Another rising sophomore who has done more than hold his own to open up his week at the PBR Future Games. Possessing a smooth left-handed stroke with an athletic 5-foot-11, 175-pound frame, Gatson reached base twice in his three at-bats with a sharply-hit single back up the middle and a walk in his next at-bat. Works more short-to-long in his operation that has shown the ability to produce firm contact (97.8 mph) with ease. Naturally-gifted athlete that glides around the base paths with 6.90-speed. Continues to show why he's regarded as one of the top prospects in the 2025 class in AL.

Cade Miles SS / Hartselle , AL / 2024

Another prospect from Team Alabama that was mentioned in Shooter Hunt's Quick Hits article from yesterday's workout, Miles carried over that strong offensive approach to gameplay this morning. Hitting from the left side, Miles found the gap in his second at-bat today for a backside two-RBI double using a confident approach. Standing 5-foot-11, 170-pounds, Miles is always balanced from the left side working mostly gap-to-gap. Posted a quality workout yesterday running a personal-best 6.94 60 YD, showed arm strength across the infield at 86 mph and found the barrel consistently during his BP round with a top EV at 94.1 mph. Another good one to circle for the next couple of days.
