PBR Jr. Future Games: Alabama Day 1 Recap

Austin Sharp
Alabama Scouting Director

EMERSON, GA - The 9th Annual PBR Jr. Future Games kicked off its first day of pool play games with each team playing a single game across both age groups. After taking part in a pro-style workout yesterday, teams were eager to compete against other states while representing their own state today. With numerous college coaches watching on as teams competed throughout the day at LakePoint Sports in Emerson, GA, numerous players from Team Alabama showed out en route to a 2-1 day across both age groups.

This event runs in conjunction with the PBR Future Games. The Future Games features the top uncommitted players in the Class of 2024 and 2025 from across the Prep Baseball Report’s 40+ state coverage area. It is one of the most highly recruited events of the summer and attracts more than 300 college coaches from across the country each year.

Today, we take a look back with a brief recap of each game, including players who stood out on all three teams representing the state of Alabama.

Team Alabama 13U

Getting off to a good start in pool play, Team Alabama 13U took Game 1 of the PBR Jr. Future Games with an 11-5 victory of Team MO/Kan. After falling behind in the 1st inning of the game, Team Alabama took the lead back in the early innings and never looked back with multiple run-scoring innings throughout the contest. Offensively, Team Alabama was paced by OF Braden Martin (Lee Scott Academy) who went 2-for-3 with three RBI's and two R's scored. Also contributing to the offense, INF Beckett Brown (Parkview, GA), OF Miles Norman (GA), SS Hudson Smith (James Clemens), OF Manning Amorde (UMS-Wright), C Evan Taylor (Spain Park), C Keaton Coffee (Corner), 1B Andrew Bennett (Mobile Christian) and 1B Brodie Wilson (Faith Academy) all drove home a run in the contest. Coffee was another player who recorded a multi-hit performance, going 2-for-2 with an RBI double in the middle innings.

On the mound, Team Alabama received some quality innings in relief from a pair of pitchers that were able to quiet the MO/Kan offense that put up four runs in the 1st. RHP/SS Gavin Lang (Collinsville) pitched in going 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R & 3 K's while working his fastball up to 81 mph in the process. Closing out the game, RHP/SS Connor Greb (Spain Park) went the final two innings and didn't allow a run while striking out a hitter. Team Alabama 13U will be back in action tomorrow against Team Illinois at 2:45 PM EST on Field 13.

Team Alabama 14U (1)

In their first game of pool play at the PBR Jr. Future Games, Team Alabama 14U (1) dropped their contest by score of 9-1 to a Team Louisiana team that came out swinging it from the get-go. Alabama did, however, receive a quality start from RHP Brody Lambert (Faith Academy). Lambert worked the first two innings of the contest, and only allowed one run while not giving up a hit in the process. He worked in the upper-70's consistently with his fastball.

At the plate, Alabama recorded a pair of hits in the mercy-rule contest, but were unable to produce much throughout the game. Those two hits came from the bats of C Canaan Whitman (Oxford) and INF Bryce Rivers (Mobile Christian), who both recorded singles. OF Jack Blanchard (Daphne) scored the only run for Alabama after reaching on a walk early in the game. Team Alabama 14U (1) will be back in action tomorrow against Team Colorado at 5:00 PM EST on Field 13.

Team Alabama 14 (2)

Saving the most exciting game for last, Team Alabama 14U (2) outlasted Team Midwest (IA, MN, NE) in a come-from-behind victory in the nightcap. After falling behind early to Team Midwest, Alabama kept chipping away at the lead in the middle innings, and ultimately regained the lead in the 5th inning on a huge two-out, two-RBI single back up the middle from SS Kayden Helton (Mobile Christian) that proved to be the difference in the contest. He also reached earlier in the game on a walk.

Alabama also received big contributions offensively from numerous hitters, including SS Bryon Martin (St. Paul's Episcopal), C Hudson Robbins (Saraland) and SS Braydon Wright (Home School). Being a catalyst in each of his at-bats, Martin went 1-for-2 with a single, an RBI, a walk and two runs scored, while Robbins went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Wright went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles. SS Tate Johnston (St. Paul's Episcopal) also added in some quality at-bats for Alabama, going 1-for-2 with a single and a hit-by-pitch.

On the mound, Team Alabama got three huge innings of relief from LHP/OF Aiden Craven (Chelsea) that kept Alabama within striking distance. Working in the mid-70's with good command of his fastball and off-speed, Craven earned the W going 3 IP, 3 H, R, BB & 3 K's. RHP/1B Cooper Pennington (Shelby County) also worked two solid innings on the mound, and touched 85 mph with his fastball while sitting in the low-80's. Team Alabama 14U (2) will be back in action today against Team Massachusetts at 7:15 PM EST on Field 13.
