Underclass Games: Quick Hits
June 23, 2021
The Alabama Underclass Games event was held this Tuesday, June 22nd, at Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium at Jacksonville State University. This event hosted some of the top players ranging from the classes of 2023-2026. These players went through an extended pro-style workout, took batting practice using Trackman and Blast Motion sensors, and competed against each other in a gameplay setting. There were some players who showed up and continued to build off of prior performances, but there were also some new names who jumped onto our radar with a strong showing on Tuesday.
Kicking off our post-event coverage for this event, we take a look back at some of the top performers and standouts from the event. Continuing over the course of the next week or so, we will release Statistical Leaderboards for the event, then transition into releasing individual scouting reports for each player in attendance.
Quick Hits from the Underclass Games
+ OF/RHP John Robicheaux (Mountain Brook, 2024) excelled in all facets at the event yesterday, both in the pro-style workout and in gameplay. The 6-1, 165-pounder started off his stellar day by clocking a 6.86 laser-timed 60 YD, throwing 85 mph from the outfield, and posted a 91 mph exit velocity during his round of BP. That swing translated over to the game, where he logged two stand-up triples into the pull-side gap. Robicheaux then flashed some two-way ability when he ran the fastball up to 84 mph with a clean delivery. Big day for this rising sophomore.

+ SS/RHP Brendan Conner (Corner, 2024) exudes physicality with his durable 5-11, 185-pound body with broad shoulders and a strong lower-half. Uses that frame well to excel in all parts of his game, Simple setup at the plate, and uses a powerful stroke from the right side to impact the baseball to the power alleys. Worked both parts of the field with consistency, generating a 93 mph exit velocity. Also hopped on the mound during gameplay and ran the fastball up to 86 mph. Strike-thrower with feel for a tight-spinning breaking ball for some swings-and-misses.
‘24 SS/RHP Brendan Conner (@BrendanConner5; @Corner_Baseball) has one of the more physical frames in the rising soph. class at 5-11, 185-pounds w/ defined strength throughout. 93 mph EV in BP w/ LD’s to the gaps. Up to 85 mph on the mound, as well.#ALUCG21 pic.twitter.com/g00Xys1dJo

+ SS Mason Perrigo (Vestavia Hills, 2024) continued his track record of showing up at events and posting some impressive numbers across the board, using some advanced physicality in a 6-2, 180-pound frame. Kicked things off by running a 6.90 laser-timed 60 YD, then showed some sure hands up the middle and above average strength (86 mph) across the diamond. Capped off his workout by peppering balls to the pull side using an uphill plane & strong hands, producing a 97 mph exit velocity which ended up being an event-best. Took some good swings during gameplay, as well.
‘24 SS Mason Perrigo (@PerrigoMason; @1RebelBaseball) continues to show up at events & post big numbers across the board. Ran a 6.90 laser-timed 60 YD, showcased above avg. arm strength across the IF, & worked the gaps up to 97 mph in BP.#ALUCG21 pic.twitter.com/dRhhIT7ocz

+ C/RHP Hudson Gilman (Oxford, 2025) put some impressive & intriguing two-way ability on display at the event yesterday. 5-11, 175-pounds who still has more filling out to do in his frame, but already has significant strength in the lower-half. Keeps the weight back well during the swing, and showed the ability to use quick hands to get to the inner-half pitch with ease. Plenty of line drives to the pull-side during his round. An advanced defender behind the plate, posting an event-best 1.90-1.97 pop times and 77 mph C velocity. Jumped on the mound and worked a scoreless frame, running the fastball up to 81 mph and using a sharp breaking ball for chase.
Speaking of the arm, ‘25 RHP/C Hudson Gilman (@GilmanHudson; @OldGoldBB) tossed a clean frame in gameplay, running the fastball up to 81 mph. Got some S/M on an 11-5 breaking ball.

+ 3B Payne Bryan (Springville, 2023) has seemed to have filled out some to his already physical 5-11, 180-pound frame, which has helped him add more speed & athleticism. Trimmed his 60 YD from 7.37 at a previous event to a 7.08 at the event yesterday. Showed solid barrel accuracy at the plate during his round of BP, and was consistently hammering balls back up the middle to produce a 94 mph exit velocity. Also recorded a base hit during gameplay to add to his already impressive showing.
‘23 3B Payne Bryan (@SHSTuffy) posted arguably one of the louder rounds of BP during the offensive portion. Powerful stroke from the right side w/ a physical 5-11, 180-pound frame. 94 mph EV.#ALUCG21 pic.twitter.com/73ajz1eBIj

+ SS Thomas Aaron (Auburn, 2024) jumped out with his offensive profile during his round of BP, using a smooth and controlled stroke from the right side. Looked to work the middle of the field, and was on the barrel when working that way. Fluid barrel with ability to adjust during the swing and translated well to gameplay where he smoked a single into the pull-side gap. Smooth actions up the middle defensively with efficient feet and an 82 mph arm on throws across the diamond.

+ RHP Andrew Allen (Alexandria, 2024) worked two scoreless frames on the mound as one of the only “pitcher-only’s” at the event. Worked quick and pounded the zone with an economical operation. 6-0, 170-pound body with long limbs, uses a short & compact arm swing, hides the ball well. Established the fastball early in counts at 81-83 mph, then used two solid secondary offerings for chase. Changeup got plenty of swings-and-misses with the same arm speed, showing nearly 17 in. of horizontal movement at 70-71 mph. Breaking ball had biting action with 12-6 shape and 2250 rpm’s in the upper-60’s. Logged a ton of quality innings for the 5A Valley Cubs this spring as a freshman.
‘24 RHP Andrew Allen (@Andrew_Allen_15; @ValleyCubBSBL) continues to build off a stellar fresh. campaign w/ a strong showing today.

+ OF William Perry (Pell City, 2024) was one of the first few hitters to come to the plate for BP, but the rising sophomore caught our attention with his ability to handle all parts of the zone and spray the ball all over the field. Free & easy left-handed stroke with some lift produced consistent line drives back up the middle. Also turned around a fastball and sent it back up the middle for a single in gameplay. Also showed off some athleticism, running a 7.03 laser-timed 60 YD in the pro-style workout.

+ SS Drey Barrett (Holtville, 2024) is another prospect in the rising sophomore class who enjoyed a solid day all-around at the event yesterday. Has added some noticeable strength to a 6-2, 175-pound frame since the last look at last summer’s PBR Junior Future Games. Took some controlled, aggressive swings and was consistently on the barrel during his round of BP to produce a 90 mph exit velocity. Athletic actions and movements up the middle with an accurate arm (82 mph) across the infield. Trimmed down his last 60 YD from 7.63 to 7.27 at the event yesterday.
‘24 SS/RHP Drey Barrett (@DreyBarrett; @HoltvilleBaseB) has continued to grow & fill out a 6-2, 175-pound since the #JFG2020 last year. Taking aggressive swings early on, peppering the pull side gap.#ALUCG21 pic.twitter.com/ayTiu06kLf
