Unsigned Senior Games Position Player Evaluations: Team 2 (Royal)

Adam Akin
Director of Scouting

The 2016 PBR Tennessee Unsigned Senior Games took place on Sunday, September 18 at Woody Hunt Stadium on the campus of Cumberland University and included a position player workout, followed by pitcher bullpens.  The original schedule was adjusted, due to heavy rain on Saturday evening. Players were afforded the opportunity to showcase their abilities to the PBR Tennessee staff and college coaches in attendance. The following is our evaluation of every position player that was assigned to the Royal Team in Sunday’s action.

OUTFIELDERS

Peyton Henderson, OF, Riverdale, 2017
60 Time: 7.27, Position Velocity:  OF-77, Exit Velocity: 84
5-foot-9, 148-pound, LHH hits from a balanced and open stance and starts with his hands in a fairly high position, uses a short stride with a lowering and push back of his hands to get loaded, lower half gets through but pulls him up to a tall position at and through contact, bat path is mostly flat through the zone but can be a little steep on lower pitches, stayed through the ball and drove it up the middle and toward left-center.  Defensively, plays an athletic and aggressive outfield, plays through the ball quickly and with confidence, showed good footwork and hands, short transfer led to a short arm action through a high ¾ release point and produced mostly accurate throws. Henderson has shown improvements to his game, even since July.

Zachary Wallace, OF/RHP, Goodpasture Christian School, 2017
60 Time: 6.89, Position Velocity:  OF-83, Exit Velocity: 85
5-foot-10, 185-pound, RHH hits from a taller and open stance with the bat rested right down on his shoulder, uses an abbreviated leg kick and stride with a push back of his hands and some barrel tilt to get loaded, stride can land a little too soon at times, lower half is simple but definitely gets his hips through the zone, bat path is very short and flat through the zone, showed the ability to hit hard line drives from gap-to-gap.  Defensively, showed average hands and footwork as he got behind the ball but didn’t play through it as aggressively as he could, gather and transfer took an extra step and led to a shorter arm action through a high ¾ release point, solid arm strength.

Daniel Willie, RHP/OF, Ooltewah, 2017
60 Time: 7.2, Position Velocity:  OF-83, Exit Velocity: 82
6-foot-2, 160-pound, RHH  hits from a balanced and even stance and begins with some subtle hand movement, used a toe-tap and stride at times and a regular stride others with the same subtle hand movement backwards to get loaded, lower half gets through but still stays tall, stays mostly balanced throughout his swing but somewhat comes up through it, can get on front foot, bat path is pretty flat but can get armsy, hit a lot more balls hard up the middle than we have seen previously.  Defensively, played  through the ball well with good hands and footwork and used a clean exchange to help produce a long and clean arm action through a high ¾ to over-the-top release point to produce accurate throws with solid arm strength and more carry than normal.

Alex Hames, OF, Karns, 2017
60 Time: 7.21, Position Velocity:  OF-76, Exit Velocity: 78
5-foot-7, 155-pound, RHH hits from a balanced and even stance with some initially relaxed hand positioning, uses a short and very early stride along with a raising and push back of his hands with a slight barrel tilt to get loaded, lower half fires pretty well and certainly keeps him balanced, swing plane begins very steep but seems to be able to flatten out around contact, hit balls with a lot of spin, balls in the air to left and on the ground up the middle.  Defensively, showed good footwork and hands with some aggressiveness in playing through the ball with consistency, worked smoothly in the outfield and showed a clean exchange that led to a long arm action through an over-the-top slot, throws showed more carry than velo would suggest.

Noah Huddleston, OF, Gallatin, 2017
60 Time: 7.46, Position Velocity:  OF-78, Exit Velocity: 79
5-foot-10, 155-pound, RHH hits from a tall and slightly open stance, uses a pretty conventional stride and a push back of his hands to get loaded, lower half tries to get through but pulls him forward instead of truly firing, gets a little bit of an arm bar and causes his swing path to be steep coming into the zone but usually flattens out and provides some lift at the end, hit some line drives up the middle in BP.  Defensively, showed average hands and footwork, coming through the ball aggressively but fielding it a little unsure at times, exchange leads to a long arm action through a high ¾ release point that produced fairly accurate throws with decent arm strength.

FIRST BASEMEN

Brayden Barnes, 1B/RHP, Rossview, 2017
60 Time: 7.33, Position Velocity:  IF-81, Exit Velocity: 93
6-foot-1, 185-pound, RHH hits from a balanced and even stance, hands start his bat laying just above his back shoulder, loads with a short stride and some sudden movement back and up with his hands, lower half fires quickly but leaves even more bat speed behind by struggling to get all the way through, bat path is flat with some lift through contact, hit balls hard with his strength that sets him ahead, recorded the highest exit velocity at the event.  Defensively, showed average hands and footwork around the bag, seems to know the position well but could play through the ball more smoothly, is able to make all of the plays, low exchange led to a short arm action through a high ¾ slot to make throws across the infield with decent carry.

James Hale, 1B/LHP, Spring Hill, 2017
60 Time: 8.27, Position Velocity:  IF-76, Exit Velocity: 91
6-foot-1, 195-pound, LHH hits from a wide and open stance and begins with the barrel almost behind his head, uses a short stride along with a push back and slight raise of his hands to get loaded, lower half makes some quick and powerful movements but can’t completely clear his hips because of his slightly closed stride foot, bat path starts a little steep but flattens out and adds some lift at the end, strong kid showed some pull power, comes around the ball some.  Defensively, showed good hands and average footwork around the bag, fielded the ball with ease, clean transfer led to a longer arm action through a high ¾ slot to produce accurate throws across the infield.

Nick Cummings, 1B/RHP, Davidson Academy, 2017
60 Time: 7.47, Position Velocity:  IF-83, Exit Velocity: 83
6-foot-1, 180-pound, RHH hits from a taller and slightly open stance and showed some positive little pre-pitch movement with his hands, uses a leg kick into a short stride and a waggle of the bat to get loaded, lower half fires but short stride keeps him tall and doesn’t allow for as much leverage as he is capable of creating, bat path is steep through the zone, could get a little armsy but did show a little pop when staying up the middle.  Defensively, showed average hands and footwork around the bag as he could’ve played through the ball a little more aggressively, low exchange and a glove pat let to a short arm action through a high ¾ slot, throws had pretty good carry across the infield.

MIDDLE INFIELDERS

Gresham Mosley, 2B/RHP, Stewarts Creek, 2017
60 Time: 7.32, Position Velocity:  IF-77, Exit Velocity: 79
5-foot-10, 155-pound, RHH hits from a balanced but upright and even stance with some higher initial hand positioning, uses a quick and abbreviated leg kick with a short stride and a lowering and push back of his hands to get loaded, lower half really fires and clears his hips to add some strength to his swing, bat path is flat to slightly upward through the zone and gets through the ball well, stays behind the ball well, can get pushy but is able to drive the ball from middle to right-center consistently.  Defensively, showed pretty good hands and footwork in the infield, played around and through the ball well ability to make different plays, exchange was quick and led to a short arm action through a high ¾ to over-the-top release that produced accurate throws with decent carry across the infield.

Alexander Woollums, 2B/OF, Signal Mountain, 2017
60 Time: 7.00, Position Velocity:  IF-66, OF-72, Exit Velocity: 77
5-foot-9, 145-pound, RHH hits from a narrow and slightly open stance with some relatively high hand positioning to start, uses an early and long stride with a lowering and push back of his hands to get loaded, lower half gets through quickly but can tend to pull him forward and up on his front leg, bat path is mostly flat through the zone as his backside allows him to get his barrel down on plane, hit a lot of low line drives up the middle and toward right-center.  Defensively, showed above average hands and footwork in the infield, puts himself in good positions and tries to play though the ball smoothly, can get back a little on his heels, transfer takes an extra step and leads to a short arm action through a high ¾ slot, throws had some accuracy with carry that can be improved, showed versatility by competing in the outfield as well.

Enzo Montenotte, 2B, Knoxville Christian School, 2017
60 Time: 7.59, Position Velocity:  IF-70, Exit Velocity: 81
5-foot-9, 165-pound, RHH hits from a balanced and even stance and begins with both elbows fairly high, uses an abbreviated leg kick and a short stride with hardly any hand movement until a late push back get loaded, lower half struggles to get through the zone consistently, sometimes finishes on his back heel, late load can cause a slight arm bar that causes him to come around the ball at times, swing plane is mostly flat and was able to barrel most balls up and stay in the middle of the field in BP.  Defensively, showed above average footwork and hands as he made a conscious effort to work around and through the ball smoothly, quick exchange led to a short arm action through a high ¾ slot.

THIRD BASEMEN

Patrick Music, 3B, Ardmore (AL), 2017
60 Time: 7.15, Position Velocity:  IF-81, Exit Velocity: 86
5-foot-9, 175-pound, RHH hits from a balanced and mostly even stance with some low initial hand positioning, uses a short stride and hardly any hand movement at all to get loaded, lower half is explosive and provides some torque to his swing, does come forward a little too much at times but stays behind the ball, bat path is slightly up and through the plane of the pitch from his lower hand position, showed the ability to drive the ball all over the field with some pop, gap-to-gap hitter.  Defensively, showed good hands and footwork at the corner and some athleticism that’s hard to find over there, didn’t play through it as strongly as he could but did well, smooth transfer led to a short but loose arm action through a high ¾ to over-the-top slot to produce firm and accurate throws across the infield.

Chase Nichols, 3B/RHP, Clarksville, 2017
60 Time: 7.39, Position Velocity:  IF-75, Exit Velocity: 82
6-foot-1, 155-pound, RHH hits from an athletically balanced and slightly open stance and begins with the bat resting barely above his shoulder, uses a quick and short stride with a push back of his hands and some barrel tilt to get loaded, lower half gets through but keeps him tall with a straight back leg that holds back his leverage, bat path is mostly flat through the zone, hit most of his balls in BP up the middle or toward right-center and seemed to be trying to guide it that way.  Defensively, showed athleticism in his hands and footwork at the corner, put himself in a lot of good positions and played through the ball well with some fluidity, gather and exchange used a glove pat that led to a mostly short arm action through a high ¾ slot.

Maddox Vondohlen, 3B/RHP, Stewarts Creek, 2017
60 Time: 7.63, Position Velocity:  IF-76, Exit Velocity: 71
5-foot-10, 185-pound, RHH hits from a balanced and open stance with a little pre-pitch wiggle of his hands, uses an abbreviated leg kick and early stride with a movement down to back to up again with his hands to get loaded, lower half gets through but is sometimes late and/or cant completely get his hips cleared because of his closed stride foot, swing path stays mostly flat through the zone, muscly kid hit some hard line drives up the middle in BP.  Defensively, showed good footwork and above average hands in the infield, played around and through the ball well and pretty aggressively, clean and lower exchange led to a short arm action through a high ¾ release point, accurate throws with decent carry across the infield.

CATCHERS

William Hudson, C, Wilson Central, 2017
60 Time: 8.08, Pop Time: 1.98-2.09, Position Velocity:  C-75, Exit Velocity: 84
5-foot-8, 180-pound, RHH hits from a balanced and very slightly open stance with some subtle and smooth hand waggle, uses a short stride with barely any hand movement to get loaded, lower half works well to get through the zone and keep him behind the ball at the same time, uses his backside well through the swing, bat path is very flat through the zone and produced a lot of hard line drives up the middle in BP.  Defensively, showed good hands and above average footwork behind the plate, flew a little open on his throws to second because of his footwork, clean and smooth exchange was low but led to a short arm action through an over the top slot to produce pretty strong throws to 2B.

Ryan Troup, C/3B, East Nashville Magnet, 2017
60 Time: 7.59, Pop Time: 2.15-2.28, Position Velocity:  C-70, IF-70, Exit Velocity: 70
6-foot-0, 165-pound, RHH hits from a fairly wide and even stance with some relatively high initial hand positioning, uses a short stride and a late and subtle movement back with his hands to get loaded, lower half works to try and get through but doesn’t always get there, will pull forward without rotation at times, swing plane starts out steeper because of his high hand positioning but seems to flatten out around contact, hit a lot of low line drives and ground balls toward right field.  Defensively, showed average hands and footwork behind the plate with a long and low exchange and flew open with his stride on throws to 2B, long arm action came through a high ¾ slot, showed some versatility by competing at 3B as well.
