Alabama HS Team Preview: Bibb County Choctaws

The 2024 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Alabama.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in the Jacksonville/Oxford/Montgomery area at the AISA or AHSAA state championships, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Alabama. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing our scheduled podcasts and releasing our preseason top-10 rankings in each AHSAA classification.

Each week we will be releasing our Players of the Week, updating the top-10 ranks in each AHSAA classification, as well updating our Power 25 overall rankings. TEAM OUTLOOK

The Bibb County Choctaws enter the 2024 season with plenty of optimism after yet another deep playoff run last season. The Choctaws, who have grown into one of the top programs in Class 4A over the past few seasons, look primed to once again have another strong season this spring with some quality returners coming back.

The Choctaws were ranked inside the top-10 in our Class 4A poll for the entirey of the season last year, and we're even inside the top-5 for a good amount of the season. They look like they're shaping up to be one of the top-10 teams in the classification this spring with plenty of pitching depth and a strong offense that has a chance to be better than it has been over the past few seasons. After winning their area last season, the Choctaws swept Slocomb in the 1st round of the playoffs, but were eliminated in the Sweet 16 against Bayside Academy in three games to close their season with a 25-11 record. They'll rely on some familiar faces from last year's team this spring, and it all starts with SS/RHP Matthew Cash (Jacksonville State, 2024), who is regarded as one of the top shortstops in the state of Alabama. Cash is a four-year starter for the Choctaws and is coming off a junior season where he hit .432 with 12 2B's, 3 HR's, and 43 RBI's. He is also one of their top arms in the rotation, as he went 4-4 with a 2.27 ERA and 58 K's on the mound in 2023. 3B Bodie Giddiens (2025) is another upperclassmen returner who will bring some thump to the middle of their order after hitting .313 a season ago, while RHP Daniel Stringfellow (2025) should once again be one the top arms in their rotation after posting a 6-2 record with a 1.90 ERA and 54 K's last year as a sophomore. Looking at some other juniors and seniors who are looking to step into larger roles this season, RHP Dawson Shoults (2024) and RHP/OF Macain McMillan (2025) are sure to be key pieces in their pitching rotation this spring, while C Will Alston (2024), OF Ty Burkes (2024), and OF Blake Dailey (2024) are seniors who are expected to hit somewhere in their order this season. Looking at some underclassmen, RHP/SS Ethan McMillan (2026) and RHP/INF Brayden Cash (2027) are a pair of underclassmen who may not have much varsity experience, but possess the talent to possibly step into important roles and compete for playing time this spring. 

The Choctaws are hoping to once again be one of the top teams in Class 4A this spring, and it looks like they certainly will have the talent to be one of the main contenders at the end of the season. They'll compete in Area 5 against Dallas County, Hale County, and Wilcox Central for a berth in the playoffs at the end of the regular season. Expext Bibb County to be a very competitive club this spring with a chance of making another deep playoff run in Class 4A in 2024.
