Alabama HS Team Preview: Whitesburg Christian Academy Warriors

Austin Sharp
Alabama Scouting Director

The 2024 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Alabama.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in the Jacksonville/Oxford/Montgomery area at the AISA or AHSAA state championships, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Alabama. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing our scheduled podcasts and releasing our preseason top-10 rankings in each AHSAA classification.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state.

Each week we will be releasing our Players of the Week, updating the top-10 ranks in each AHSAA classification, as well updating our Power 25 overall rankings. One thing, especially, you don’t want to miss are our scheduled podcasts with guests from across the state, as well as the recaps and previews of the big games we’re covering.

*Please note the information has been gathered from head coaches across the state, based on their replies to the questionnaire we distributed over this offseason.

TEAM OUTLOOK

The Whitesburg Christian Academy Warriors seemed to really take big stride within their program a season, as they posted a winning record at 18-15 and advanced to the Elite 8 in Class 2A. Back this spring with a new head coach at the helm and some exciting returners coming back, the Warriors look primed to continue to make noise in Class 2A this spring.

The Warriors continue to develop their baseball program after starting it up a few years ago, and seem to be way ahead of schedule with consistent playoff appearances and a quality mix of talented players already on their roster. Finishing as the runner-up in their area a season ago, the Warriors went on the road in the 1st round and swept Cleveland to advance to the Sweet 16, where they also swept Southeastern. Matching up against Vincent, one of the top teams in Class 2A and the eventual state runner-up, the Warriors were swept and closed their season with an 18-15 record. This spring, the Warriors have to be excited about the season with six position players and four pitchers returning from last year's Elite 8 team. They'll look to build off that success and have another strong season this spring. Some notable returners back this spring are RHP/INF Luke Holbrook (2025), OF/RHP Andrew Summers (2025), RHP/INF Kaleb Robinson (2025), and RHP/OF Evan Dodd, all of which attended PBR preseason events and performed well. C Tate Walker (2024) is a senior who will be back this spring and be looked upon for leadership, while INF/RHP Ben Pugh (2027) and 1B Ryan Kretz (2025) all are looking to have big seasons, as well. INF/RHP Chase Utley (2028) is an underclassmen who has a chance to make a big impact at the varsity level this spring as an eighth-grader. The shortstop has a bright future and is a PBR Jr. Future Games alumni from this past summer.

There's plenty to be excited about for the Warriors going into this season, as they will look to continue the momentum they've built over the past few seasons and seem to have the talent to do so. They'll compete in Area 14 against Falkville, Hatton, Lindsay Lane Christian, and Tanner for a berth in the playoffs at the end of the regular season. Whitesburg Christian Academy looks to be strong on paper and will be one to follow this spring in Class 2A.
