Area Code Underclass: Prospects/Thoughts/Reactions

The increased presence of MLB scouts at this year’s Area Code Underclass was clearly an indication that organizations are making a push to gather a longer track record and more information on prospects at an earlier age. With future stars and impact-makers spread across six teams from all over the country, the players were able to go head-to-head against their peers and show off their tools. Late in the summer, many of the players appeared a bit worn down with velocities considerably lower for some, and bat speeds a tick slower. However, even with the lower energy level, many emerged as premier prospects in the class, and names to follow closely over the next two or three years.

Below are some of the top prospects and storylines that came out of the three-day event:

Tyree Reed OF / American Canyon, CA / 2021

Reed oozes athleticism and projectability, and had the highest-ceiling of any player at the event. The uncommitted, 6-foot-2, 180-pound centerfielder looked the part of an elite prospect as he finished 5-for-11 with two doubles and a triple while locking down centerfield. The left-handed hitter was consistently on time, separating his hands down and back with a minor leg lift before a slight coil triggered the barrel quickly through the zone on an uphill plane. He exhibited the ability to work gap-to-gap with much more power likely on the way as he fills out a long-limbed, wiry frame. His bat-to-ball skills stood out, and he had no problem entertaining velocity or spin. In the outfield, his long, graceful strides and ball-skills allowed him to track effortlessly. Perhaps more importantly, Reed’s natural confidence in himself only aids his elite tools, and should help carry him as he progresses. All in all, it was a breakout performance for the NorCal product, and as a left-handed hitting center fielder with speed and projectable power, expect Reed to have plenty of eyes on him moving forward.
