Commitment Spotlight: Brandon Compton

Brett Thorney
State Scouting Director

Today, We had the pleasure of catching up with 2022 OF/ LHP Brandon Compton from Buckeye Union. Compton recently made a commitment to the University of San Diego. Compton was a member of #TEAMARIZONA for the 2020 PBR Future Games. He has shown some real upside at the plate over the last year with an advanced left-handed approach. He continues to get stronger and fill out physically which has helped him gain more pop at the plate. Compton also shows some upside on the mound from the left side with clean repeatable mechanics. Today, He took some time to answer some questions for us about his college recruiting experience.

Scouting Report

1/26/20

5-foot-9 165-pounds, two-way player, balanced frame with projectability. Strength & maturity starting to come. Overall clean actions & high baseball IQ. Left-handed hitter with advanced approach. Starts from an athletic base with some weight on left leg, knees inside toes. Uses a small pick-up with minimal forward movement to generate leverage. Loads hands slightly back with some stoppage. Short level swing with middle approach. Hard contact at 87mph exit velocity. Showed ability to use LCF gap well. Capable corner OF, ran a 7.64 60-yard dash. More athletic than time shows. Used a side shuffle on throws to home with 82mph arm strength. Repeatable delivery on the mound, throwing strikes at 78-81mph combined with above average control on his average 12/6 CV. Going to be a player to monitor as he physically develops. Well rounded player.

PBR: Why did you choose the school you did?

Compton: I picked the University of San Diego because it has exactly what I am looking for in a college.  I was looking for an amazing location, somewhere on the west coast and close to home, an outstanding baseball program, and the opportunity to try and play as a two-way player.  They have been a dream school of mine for a long time, and I am very excited to be committed to them.

PBR: What other schools were you considering?

Compton: I was considering any west coast school that has a great baseball program. I was actively in contact with multiple schools, but I was mainly talking to Santa Clara, Grand Canyon, and Nevada-Reno. However, I chose San Diego because I feel that it is the perfect fit for me and my family.

PBR: Where did the coaching staff first see you?  How did your relationship develop with him?

Compton: I sent emails and videos to the coaches and followed them on Twitter.  Then a little later, Coach Ungricht and Coach Florer from USD followed me back.  They were able to see workouts and game film through that and see me develop during that time period.  Eventually, I started reaching out to them by phone, and that’s when the relationships with both coaches really grew.  They gave me an offer right before the PBR Future Games.

PBR: Do you feel relieved now that the process is over and you can just focus on baseball and not deal with everything that goes into picking a school?

Compton: Absolutely.  I am very relieved to just be able to focus on developing as a baseball player and not have to worry about where I will be going to college.

PBR: Was there one deciding factor that put your choice over the top?

Compton: One of the deciding factors came down to location.  I love the San Diego area, and it is an easy drive away from home for me and my family.  It was also really important to me that they have a strong, winning baseball tradition and an excellent academic reputation.

PBR: Who has helped you the most to get to where you are today?

Compton: I’ve been really fortunate to work with many excellent coaches over the years.  But, I would not be where I am today without my parents.  They have always been my biggest fans and biggest supporters.

PBR: What were your expectations about the recruiting process?  Was it easy/difficult?

Compton:  At first, it was very confusing trying to understand what I should be doing to both improve my game, but also what things I should be doing to put myself out there in order to be recruited.  But then I started working with a college advisor, and they helped me understand what needed to happen, which made the process easier and less stressful.

PBR: What plans does the coaching staff have in store for you in your freshman season?

Compton: Obviously, I want to be able to play and be an impact player my freshman year.  And the coaches told me that I, like every other player on the team, will have an opportunity to earn my spot whether it is on the field, pitching, or both.

PBR: What is your most memorable baseball moment to date?

Compton: I have had a bunch of amazing moments playing baseball, but the most memorable one for me was playing in the PBR Future Games.  Team Arizona was able to compete and go 3-0 in the games, and I am glad I was able to contribute to that success.  Playing at LakePoint in Georgia with those guys was so much fun and is definitely something I will always remember.

PBR: Who is the best player you have competed against?

Compton: I had to face LHP 2020 ASU commit, Ronan Kopp, as a lefty batter in a PBR showcase.  I eventually grounded out to second, but it was by far the most uncomfortable at bat I have ever had in my life.
