Commitment Spotlight: Jayden Smith

Brett Thorney
State Scouting Director

Today, We had the pleasure of catching up with 2021 OF Jayden Smith of Campo Verde High School to ask him a few questions about his college recruiting experience. Smith made a recent commitment  to South Mountain CC to further his baseball career. Smith has been on the PBR radar for awhile now as he was a member of Team Arizona at the PBR Future Games in 2019. Smith has been one of the top OF's in the state over the last two years. He has one of the more consistent bats in the class with top of the order potential at the next level.  As a high on base player, Smith also has good feel for the barrel that gives him deceptive pop from the frame. His extra base hit potential improves with his strength. Outside of his bat, the way Smith plays the game stands out. He is a high energy player that is always looking to take that extra base and creates havoc on the base paths. Defensively, he has shown sub 6.7 speed and has no problem tracking it in CF. Congrats to Jayden Smith on his commitment.

Scouting Report

6/12/19

5’9 160-pound frame. Narrow, tall set up sinking into his legs while loading. Small leg kick to get into back side. Keeps bat flat throughout load and swing, working into the zone early and keeping him on plane. Middle approach, finding the barrel frequently in game play. Exit velo at 87 MPH. Arm at 77 may limit him to left field but runs well enough to play center. 6.7 60.

PBR: Why did you choose the school you did?
Smith: I chose the school I did because of how great south does at developing guys and sending them to great 4 year schools where they are successful.

PBR: What other schools were you considering?
Smith: I was considering a lot of junior colleges in Arizona.

PBR: Where did the coaching staff first see you? How did your relationship develop with them?
Smith: The coaching staff first saw me at tournaments over the summer. Coach Turk and the whole coaching staff started to reach out soon after and showed a lot of interest.

PBR: Do you feel relieved now that the process is over and you can just focus on baseball and not deal with everything that goes into picking a school?
Smith:  I feel very relieved the process is over with everything going on with COVID-19 and just being able to get to work on my game to be ready for the next level.

PBR: Was there one deciding factor that put your choice over the top?
Smith: Just the amount of interest the whole coaching staff showed me really helped make my decision easy.

PBR: Who has helped you the most to get to where you are today?
Smith: My family for sure has. They have been through the ups and downs and I couldn’t have done it without them.

PBR: What were your expectations about the recruiting process? Was it easy/difficult?
Smith:  I did not know what to expect with the recruiting process being the first one in my family to go through it. It was difficult at times especially with schools not being able to come out and watch.

PBR: What plans does the coaching staff have in store for you in your freshman season?
Smith: The coaching staff wants me to continue getting better every day so I can hopefully earn an everyday role for them my freshman year.

PBR: What is your most memorable baseball moment to date?
Smith: The most memorable baseball moment was definitely going to Georgia for the PBR Futures Games. Such a great atmosphere for anyone who has a dream of playing at the next level.

PBR: Who is the best player that you have competed against?
Smith: The best play I have competed against is Wes Kath.
