Five Uncommitted 2019 Outfielders

Jordon Banfield
Arizona Scouting Director

As our fall events in Arizona are fast approaching, we will spend lots of time in September highlighting some of the best available 2019 prospects in the state. Without any D2 or D3 programs in the state, tons of very solid players remain uncommitted and most will be at the Unsigned Senior Showcase on 10/10 at Sunnyslope HS. Limited space for the event remains and you can REGISTER HERE.

Today we look at five outfielders capable of being solid contributors at the next level, possible D1 types and definite high-level Juco/D2 players. All of these prospects have consistently performed at a high level in live game action as well as at previous PBR events. Full report are included with full video available in individual profiles for PBR PLUS subscribers.

Scouting Report

6/27/18 - 6-foot-3, 175-pounds. Nager has been under the radar after undergoing Tommy John, but really stood out with his swing, athleticism and projectable frame. Leg kick trigger, generates bat speed with ease, natural loft; 89 mph exit velocity. Nager posted a 6.83 60-yard dash and despite not being cleared to throw at max effort yet, was reportedly into the mid-80's as a sophomore prior to injury. If the arm comes back at full strength this fall we could be looking at a potentially high-end prospect.

Scouting Report

6/27/18 - McGregor may be the best physical specimen in the 2019 class with a strong, athletic 6-foot-4, 205-pound frame. He shows elite flashes during BP, with signifiant raw power generated almost exclusively by physical strength. Although McGregor has improved his rhythm in the box significantly, he creates almost no torque or separation, firing his lower half and hands at virtually the same time. This can also lead to some inconsistency when facing live pitching, but can certainly be improved with some mechanical adjustments that get his body sequencing more effectively. He also showed a 50 arm from the outfield, with a longer release from a low 3/4 slot with solid accuracy and carry. If the elite student (Ivy level) is able to put it all together in game action at some point soon, he could vault way up the rankings and is likely a fit for someone at the DI level either way due to the combination of tools (7.06 60-yard dash, 93 MPH exit velo, 91 MPH OF velo) and academics.

1/28/18 - Extremely physical 6-foot-4, 210-pound frame with thickness in lower half. Did not throw from the outfield due to arm soreness but turned in solid 7.09 60-yard dash for body type and should be able to handle an outfield corner at the next level. Hits from slightly open setup with knee-knock load and creates a wide base with stride. Shows impressive raw power generated mostly with physical strength and shows flat bat bath. 88 mph exit velocity. Excited to see more from this physical 2019 prospect at full strength.

Scouting Report

6/27/18 - 6-foot, 150-pound frame. Room to add considerable size and strength. Offensively hit from an upright, balanced set up. Shorter stride, rides the hips forward, barrel gets on plane deep in the strike zone, posture tilts over plate at contact, creates lift at times; 81 mph exit velocity. Defensively worked out in the outfield where Sachen showed he could play all three outfield spots. Possesses the speed to play center, running the second best 60-yard dash at the event at 6.60 seconds. Moved confidently to the baseball with proper footwork. Good exchange, long, loose arm action, fast arm; 84 mph outfield velocity. Also hopped up on the mound running his fastball up to 81 mph. Long arm action, forearm outside of 90 degrees before going into layback, drives off back leg aggressively, high ¾ release, soft front knee at times. Fastball featured varying life. Also showed a curveball at 71-72 mph. The projection remaining in Sachen is intriguing.

5/19/18 - Ran a superb 6.69 60-yard dash and is an athletic mover that throws well (86 mph veto) in the outfield. There's some length in the swing and a more contact oriented approach to all fields may benefit him moving forward. Should add strength/mass to very lean 5-foot-11, 150-pound frame as he matures.

Scouting Report

6/27/18 - 5-foot-9, 190 pound frame. Physically developed body with significant present strength and broad shoulders. At the plate, balanced set up, short stride, maintains balance throughout swing. Simple, compact, on-plane swing. Extension through contact, some present strength and bat speed; 92 mph exit velocity. Defensively worked out in the outfield. Corner outfield profile. Solid footwork, played through the baseball. Used an aggressive crow to generate some arm speed on throws; 84 mph outfield velocity. Also ran a 7.40 60-yard dash. Appears to be a better athlete than 60 time indicates.

Scouting Report

6/27/18 - 6-foot-1, 190-pound frame. Relaxed, balanced set up at the plate. Hits the ball with authority, present raw power. Leg kick and barrel tip load and timing mechanism. Aggressively fires the hips, creates separation, gets on plane early, present bat speed, stiff front leg, posture tilts over plate, two-handed finish; 90 mph exit velocity. Ram showed well defensively in the outfield, profiling best at a corner position. Moved to the ball under control before accelerating through the ball, proper footwork, good instincts; 81 mph outfield velocity. Also ran a 7.14 60-yard dash.

12/16/17 - The best looking physical specimen in attendance with a strong 6-foot-1, 195-pound frame. Ram shows big raw power (50), launching multiple long homers with wood in BP and posting a 91 mph exit velocity. Despite some crudeness to his swing, with a short stride, jerky hand load and short two-hand finish, his natural athleticism produced plenty of loud barrels. An athletic mover in the outfield, Ram tracks the ball well and turned in an 83 mph outfield velocity. His 7.26 60-yard dash doesn’t match up with what you see in the field and much better times have been reported. A very interesting follow as he cleans up some of his mechanics and potentially regains some speed.
