Preseason All-State Games: Quick Hits (Part 1)

Brett Thorney
Arizona Scouting Director

The Preseason All State Games took place on Sunday, January 26th at Phoenix Municipal Stadium in Tempe, AZ, home of the Arizona State Sun Devils. We began our post-event analysis earlier this week with our Statistical Analysis by taking a look at the top statistical performers in each category. National Crosschecker, Shooter Hunt also highlighted some of his first impression in his On the Hunt: Arizona Preseason All-State Edition yesterday. This annual invite only event featured some of the top 2020-2023 grads in the state of Arizona and has developed into a must attend event before spring coverage begins.

Today, we continue our analysis with an early look at some of the initial takeaways from the Preseason All State Games in Part One of our Quick Hits.

Quick Hits (Part 1)

Tyler Stone 1B / Chaparral, AZ / 2020

6-foot-3 220-pounds, big body with strength & durability to build off. When Stone stepped into the batters box, everyone was paying attention. Had one of the better BP rounds with consistent loud contact. Aggressive but yet controlled approach to Mid/ Pull side. Had the top exit velocity of 97mph. Another aspect to his game that may go unnoticed due to his loud bat, might be his defense. Strong showing defensively. Showed athleticism and good actions around the bag. Above average glove that saved some outs with his scooping ability. Also showed an 85mph arm across the diamond which you dont see often from 1B’s. Going to be a steal for a good JC program or a sneaky pick for a D1 school looking to add depth offensively.

Enzo Apodaca OF / LHP / Chaparral, AZ / 2020

5-foot-9 170-pound, although his size might scare some D1 programs away, he backs a bigger punch than what it looks like. Had some present strength & athleticism to his frame. Ran a 6.97 60-yard dash. Easy actions in the OF combine with a solid arm at 85mph.. What really stood out was his left handed bat. Might have hit the hardest ball of the day to CF wall for a triple. Quick swing with a controlled approach. Consistent hard contact at 94mph.

Quade Swearingen OF / 2B / Corona Del Sol, AZ / 2021

5 foot-10 190-pound multi sport athlete, also plays QB on the football team. Well built physically. Runs better than one would think at a 7.02 60-yard dash. There is some rawness and rust to his overall actions but its hard to tell with this level of athlete. Current strength and pop already respectable at 88mph but should improve drastically over time this spring/summer with more baseball. Will be interesting to see how he develops on the diamond. Has the strength & athleticism to make positive adjustments.

Brandon Compton OF / LHP / Buckeye Union , AZ / 2022

5-foot-9 165-pounds. Strength is starting to come. Type of player that any coach would like on their team. Overall clean actions at the plate and on the mound. Left handed hitter with advanced approach with hard contact to RCF, 87mph exit velocity. Ability to use LCF gap. Repeatable delivery on the mound, throwing strikes at 78-81mph combined with above average control on his average 12/6 CV. Going to be a player to monitor as he physically develops. Well rounded player.

Demetrio Crisantes SS / 2B / Nogales, AZ / 2022

5-foot-11 165-pounds. Athleticism and some of the tools really stood out. Ran a 7.27 60-yard dash on a slow track. Strong arm across with carry across the diamond at 87mph. Glove & quickness were average in defensive workout and will decide whether he stays at SS or moves to 3B in the future. His hit tool really plays with consistent loud contact at 93mph- hit a triple to LF in his game. Ability to swing the bat makes him a strong follow going forward.

Hayden Lewis RHP / OF / Chaparral High School, AZ / 2022

6-foot 150-pound two way player. Thin body with some twitchy movements. Ton of room to fill out physically. Hips worked well. Had a decent day positionally but really stood out with his noticeably fast arm on the mound. Sat 84-86mph on firm FB with fade. Mixed in a hard tight slider 73-77mph. Hitters just couldn't get the timing down.
