Progress Report: Cole Sheehan

PBR has had the chance to start digging through more players and numbers since the season started has started back up. Our PBR Arizona staff has had a chance to see some players make some significant jumps recently. Today, we will be taking a look at a "Progress Report" feature that highlights players that have shown significant improvement in their game; whether it's on the mechanical end, performance wise, physicality or in the measurable statistic department. The "Progress Report" can be a minor improvement in recent months or a substantial transformation over time. Today, we will be taking a look at '21 C Cole Sheehan (Mountain Pointe).
+ 2021 C Cole Sheehan (Mountain Pointe) recently attended our Class of 2021 Top Prospect Games. Currently uncommitted, At 6-foot-1 177-pounds, his body stood out sporting a physical frame with definition, strong lower half, above average athleticism. Sheehan is a switch-hitting catcher that shows similar approach from both sides of the plate. Similar in that it's hard to distinguish which side is best without a Blast sensor or Trackman unit. From his natural right handed side, he gets connected early with good bat speed that is more consistent. Accelerates the bat onto the swing plane a bit faster with quicker time to contact. From the left side, hits from an athletic squared base with a bit more leg lift. Slower to get on plane but clean swing and has some feel for the barrel. 92 mph exit off a tee from both sides, hits some balls in mid 90’s in live BP. Displayed power potential especially from the right side. Behind the plate, shows above average athleticism & hip mobility, showing some ability to get underneath the baseball. Wide secondary stands, going up before creating direction to the bag at times. Naturally strong arm at 79mph with 1.98-2.15 pop times. Average accuracy that will improve with more extension & finish. Sheehan’s switch-hitting bat along with tools & athleticism behind the plate should make for a follow in near future.

SCOUTING REPORT
6’ 165-pound frame. Switch hitter has loose actions from both sides and has shown the ability to hit from both sides. From the right side he starts square using a small stride, while getting bat vertical. Middle approach, working around the baseball on occasion. From the left side, the better of the two, he shows easy bat speed through the middle of the field. Starts open with more rhythm using bat tip to have momentum behind the strike zone. Lands with knee flexed, giving more adjustability. Exit velo was 88 MPH. Good athlete behind the plate. Transfer close to his body, getting feet going before the catch. Quick transfer allows for feet to start earlier. 2.03-2.11 pop time.
1/27/19 Uncommitted 6’ 165 pound frame. Good overall athlete. Looks to be efficient from both sides of the plates with minor differences from either side. From the left side, had more of a pull approach with exit velo of 80 MPH. Used lower half well, rotating in sequence. Right handed, is a little more pushy as he slides into front side, trying to stay inside the ball or hit the ball the other way. Exit velo was 85 MPH from the right side. Pop time was 2.04-2.13 with arm strength of 76. As he continues to get stronger, which his frame has room for, he will make jumps behind the plate and offensively.
10/14/18 - 6-foot-0, 165-pound frame. Switch-hitting catcher. From the left side shows power to the pull side. Gets barrel out front with rhythym and loft. Slightly more stiff load/swing from the right side, with more linear, line drive type approach. Tends to push and not sync up as well, but still found barrel. Shows flashes of same bat speed, but more inconsistency. Threw better than on previous looks (2.06-2.21) with solid 75 mph velocity, but transfer is still inconsistent as times show. Continuing to gain more athleticism as shown by improved 60-yard dash (7.22).
12/27/17 - 5-foot-10, 150-pound frame. Switch-hitting catcher showed well for freshmen prospect and is a definite follow moving forward. Swing is stronger and more advanced from the right where he does a better job creating separation and was consistently on time. Posted 78 mph exit velocity. Ball tended to get stuck in glove at times on throws to 2B, which explains the wide variance in pop times (2.16-2.31) with 71 mph velo from the crouch. Feet work well; further development and cleaning up his transfer should result in times consistently on the lower end of that range. 7.44 60-yard dash.
