Uncommitted Spotlight: Quade Swearingen

Brett Thorney
State Scouting Director

We continue our coverage of uncommitted players, spotlighting them to help maximize their exposure and assist them in the recruiting process. Today, we look at 2021 OF Quade Swearingen (Corona Del Sol).

+ 2021 Quade Swearingen (Corona Del Sol)- Swearingen is a player that was been highlighted in our Uncommitted Spotlight feature back in April when the baseball season was shutdown. He was also highlighted on our "Hotlist" recently, looking at multi-sport athletes. Swearingen was off to a strong start in the spring of 2020 hitting in the middle of the order for a strong Corona Del Sol team that could have made run for the championship this past year. Being the starting QB on the football team, the early shutdown in the spring might have hurt him more than some out there. He played in the summer with limited looks while getting ready for a potential football season. Obviously, in the fall there isnt much if any baseball being played for him due to his football commitments. Swearingen is one of the top uncommitted outfielders in Arizona as well as one of the top athletes in the state. Swearingen is a strong, physical athlete with a 5-foot-10, 190-pound build. He has natural pop with strength through his swing, using a pull approach. He reminds you of a mature college player at times with a highly competitive nature. Defensively, he is a capable corner outfielder with some natural arm strength and athleticism, has ran under a 7.0 60-yard dash. Swearingen should be a guy to monitor closely going into the offseason and beginning of the spring.

Scouting Report

1/26/20

5-foot-10 190-pounds, strong physical athlete, broad shoulders, multi sport (QB1), some raw actions. Starts from an athletic squared base. Uses leg kick, landing in a good launch position where he started. Natural pop & strength through swing. Pull approach with consistent hard contact at 88ph. Capable corner outfielder that showed some speed. Ran a 7.02 60-yard dash. Average footwork, slowing feet down as he approaches the baseball- better in game. Short arm action with more in tank on 84mph throws. Should be a strong follow as he spends more time on the diamond. Has the strength & athleticism to make positive adjustments. Knows how to compete.

6/6/18 - 5-foot-10, 185-pound frame. Strong, compact build. Swearingen was one of the top athletes in attendance, posting the top 60-yard dash time at 6.83. At the plate Swearingen hit from a balanced, athletic set up. Very quick hips. Efficient path to the baseball, on-plane swing, high one handed finish. Present bat speed. His 81 mph exit velocity is not indicative of his present strength level or the type of contact he made during BP. Defensively, Swearingen has the athleticism to profile as a center fielder down the road, but could easily handle a corner spot if need be; 77 mph outfield velocity. On the mound Swearingen ran his fastball up to 80 mph using a simple, highly repeatable delivery and a high ¾ arm slot. Minimal back knee flexion/loading of the rear hip. Full arm circle, clean arm action. Change up was thrown at 67-70 mph with solid fading action. Curveball ranged from 63-65 mph with 11/5 shape and tight spin. Multi-sport athlete has very high ceiling on the diamond. Will be highly-rated when rankings are next updated.
