GREENWOOD VILLAGE — The first big event for Prep Baseball Report Colorado —the Colorado Top Prospect Games — made a huge splash on the diamond of one of the most storied high school baseball programs in the state on Saturday. Forty players from around the Denver metro area along with a handful players from around the state participated in the biggest event in the short history of PBR Colorado at Cherry Creek High School, owners of eight big-school state baseball championships, third most in state history. There were multiple colleges and MLB scouts on hand to watch as well.

For the record, the Grey Team defeated the Black Team 7-4 during the intrasquad portion of the six-hour event. Players will return Sunday for the second intra-squad. A number of players grabbed the spotlight during the game, which saw 10 pitchers toe the rubber and six catchers get into game action.

Doug Case, who will be a senior at Dakota Ridge, was the hitting star for the Grey with a two-run triple and a sacrifice fly for 3 RBIs in two at-bats. Columbine junior-to-be Tommy Gillman and Mountain Vista senior-to-be Mark Mumper had two hits apiece for the Grey. Mumper is a Grand Canyon University commit. Ryan Faircloth, class of 2016 from Dakota Ridge, also had a big hit with a two-run double down the right-field line that extended the Grey's lead to 6-2. Dakota Ridge's Kyle Derr (2016) added a run-scoring single for the Grey's final run.

The Black team was led by Mike Vessa (Lakewood 2016) with an RBI single, Thomas Sautel (Dakota Ridge 2016) with an RBI double and Gipson Garrett, who scored the third run on the back end of a double steal. Tanner Lang (Columbine 2017) led the Black with a pair of hits, a double and a single.

Many players stood out defensively.

Gillman, who played both shortstop and second base, turned in an unassisted double play, Braden Smith gunned out a runner at the plate from his center field position and Derr caught speedster Javier Garcia (Pueblo West 2015) trying to steal second base.

Garcia created his own highlight when he was clocked at 6.31 in the 60 during the individual portion of the event. It was easily the top time of all the 60 times and one of the top times posted in the state this season.

Other defensive gems were turned in by Paul Degracia (Highlands Ranch 2017) and Ben Schecter (Lakewood 2016) on slow hit ground balls. A couple of pitchers stood out as well. Mumper posted the highest fastball velocity at 86 mph with a curve ball ranging from 73-74 mph and a changeup at 76.

Blake Goldsberry (Cherry Creek 2015) tossed two sessions (6 batters per session) and topped out at 85 with his fastball with an effective changeup at 75 mph. Taylor Dye (Columbine 2016) hit 82 on the gun and showed good downward plane with his 6-foot-5, 210-pound frame. And Thomas Nagel (Dakota Ridge 2016) had a clean session with two strikeouts, topping out at 78 mph.
