Luke Fulfills Dream With Commitment To Army

MONROE, Ct. - Kevin Luke understands the challenge that lies ahead after a commitment to the United States Military Academy.

“Obviously a lot of hard work and dedication,” Luke said about what he needs to prepare for after making West Point his future home. “My school pushes me to be the best student I can be and there’s a lot of physical work, too, playing football and baseball. I’ll be well prepared when I go and I’m excited for it.”

A visit to Army took place during football season and Luke remained in contact with the coaches at the Patriot league school.

“The campus was gorgeous,” Luke reflected. “I loved everything about it. The coaches took me around on a tour and that night I did a workout on the field. The next day I watched a scrimmage against Maryland.”

A fall showcase at Loomis-Chaffee High School stirred more interest in Luke, who also talked with Northwestern, Purdue, Michigan and Pepperdine during the recruiting process..

“They came to the showcase and were planning on coming to spring games, but that was cancelled.” Luke said in reference to COVID-19 forcing a shutdown of high school sports. “I sent videos to them in the fall and spring and I got an offer from them in late May. Three weeks later I called back and committed.

“I talked to my family and we love everything about it,” Luke continued. “It’s part of something bigger than myself. The education is great and the coaches are great. I know they’ll push me to the next level.”

Speed from the 6-2 180-pounder helped sell Army on Luke.

“The big part of my game is speed,” pointed out Luke, who said his best time in the 60 to date is a 6.28. “I’m working on getting faster, bigger and physically stronger. I want to develop more strength and still keep my speed, which is my game.”

An outfielder, Luke believes there is more than speed he can provide the Army program.

“I’ll bring a competitive mentality,” Luke said. “I’ll push to be the best player I can be and do anything to help the team win.”

The desire to continue improving is vital before moving on to play college baseball at the Division I level.

“I want to make sure I get on base as much as I can by walking or making solid contact,” Luke explained. “I’m working hard on a good swing path. It’s important I do whatever I can to get on base as much as I can to be able to use my speed.”

Junior year was big for Luke, who not only transferred to Loomis-Chaffee but also reclassified as a 2021.

“I’ve always been young for my grade,” explained Luke, who points to his family, Loomis coach Donnie McKillop and Clubhouse coach Mike Porzio as big influences in his baseball game being where it is today. “The extra year of high school will help me get bigger and stronger. I can develop strength and be more physically mature.”

With a commitment in hand, Luke admits to a bit of comfort after reaching a lifelong goal.

“It’s 100 percent a relief,” Luke said of the feeling he has after making the decision to attend the United States Military Academy. “Knowing all the work I’ve put in and that I’m going to my dream school feels so great. It’s a joy to know you’re ready to take the next step in chasing your dream.”
