New England Insider: Uncommitted Underclass Spotlight - Michael Mathews
Name: Michael Mathews

Summer Ball: West Hartford American Legion

Ranked: 91st in New England's 2017 class
Scouting Report: 6-foot, 200-pound, thick, durable pitchers frame. The shoulders are sloped, lower half is strong, but still has room to fill out. A right-handed pitcher, delivery is repeatable, hands start at mid chest, leg raise has some coil to it. Stride length is long, could get in line slightly more, release is on time and out front. The arm action has some length to it, and comes out of a high-¾ slot. The fastball was 80-83 mph, tick up from the fall, continues to improve from previous workout. The curveball is a plus pitch, clocked from 71-74 mph, it’s late, with a downward break. The changeup was 76-79 mph, has some downward action to it, needs to be slightly slower off the fastball. Times to the plate were 1.65-1.69. The delivery out of the windup is a tick slow, but could pick the tempo up. Definite follow for me.
