Doug Freeman
Florida Executive Director

Parkland, FL - Wednesday night featured a matchup between two of the top 10 teams in the state of Florida with Stoneman Douglas hosting Calvary Christian Academy. No. 5 Calvary Christian would land the first punch in the marquee matchup against No. 3 Stoneman Douglas, as its two best hitters, Alex Ulloa and Rene Lastres would both homer in the first.  Their starter Irving Carter would also dominate the Eagles early, working 93-94 touching 95 mph with his fastball and tunneling a plus slider at 81-84 mph and quality changeup, striking out five of the first six hitters he faced.

Sophomore Christian Rodriguez would get the start on the mound for Stoneman Douglas, and after the first, was dominant. Attacked with fastball, curveball and split, would only allow one more hit and strike out eight total in five innings of work.

The Eagles would get one back in the second on a hit from Jake Clemente, who was solid offensively throughout the night. They would then tie the game on a two out single from Gavin Conticello in the fifth at 2-2.

Carter would allow a walk, hit, and a bunt that turned into a hit to start the fifth. He would get a comebacker, get the out at home, but an attempt to double up the runner at first would hit the runner, be ruled in play and give Douglas a 3-2 lead. Carter would finish 4.2 innings, allow five runs on seven hits, walk five and strike out nine.

The freshman Niko Benestad would pinch hit off of the Calvary relief pitcher and jump on a fastball, doubling to left-center and extending the lead to 5-2. Cameron Harris would double home three in the sixth and Grant McDonald would drive in another to make it 9-2, Calvary would get one back in the seventh, but ultimately fall 9-3.
