Last night I headed down to Naples to see the Taravella Trojans take on the Gulf Coast Sharks. Taravella would jump out to an early lead in the top of the 1st. EJ Burns led off the game with a walk, followed by a Jonathan Lopez single. A sac-bunt from Nate Carroll and a walk from Anthony Giglio loaded the bases with 1-out. Anthony Quigley would open the scoring up with a 2RBI single to LF.

EJ Burns, recent Florida Gulf Coast commit, got the start for the Trojans. He struck out 7, allowing only 1 unearned run in his 7 inning complete game effort.

It was a relatively quiet bottom half for the Sharks, an infield single by Ryder Woodson was their only baserunner of the inning. Taravella would continue to add to their lead in the top half of the 2nd. Michael Thomas drew a 1-out walk and then Burns singled up the middle. A 2-out RBI single from Nate Carroll would push the lead to 3.

Gulf Coast would answer back with a run of their own in the 2nd. An error by the Trojans would lead to the first Shark baserunner then back to back 2-out singles from Peyton Hale and John Kacinas cut the Taravella lead to just 2.

Scoring would slow down in the 3rd with both teams getting sporadic baserunners but neither could push a run across. In the 4th, Burns would help himself out with a 1-out double. Lopez drove him in on an RBI single to extend the lead back out to 3 for the Trojans.

Reliever Louis Marsala settled in for the Sharks allowing only 1 run across 4.1 innings of relief. Neither team would score runs in the 5th or 6th innings. Michael Farina and Robert Hyatt would each single but that was all the Sharks could get going. As we headed to the 7th, it looked as if Taravella would extend their lead after a Lopez walk, but the Sharks would get an inning ending double play to end the threat. Burns finished out the game for Taravella with a 1-2-3 7th.
