By Doug Freeman

Florida Scouting Director

Davie, FL- Thirteen total strikeouts from FIU recruit 2018 RHP Juan Teixeira and 2019 LHP Ryan Cabarcas helped shut out Coral Spring and lead Somerset to a 3-0 win. Teixeira would start for the Somerset, going four innings while allowing no runs on two hits, four walks and struck out nine. The big, strong right handed pitcher battled through some command issues at time to strand seven runner through his four innings. He would work 84-86 mph with the fastball early, before dropping off some later, while also throwing a curveball at 68-70 mph for strikes.

Jordan Alvarez would leadoff the game with a single, followed by a single from 2020 Florida recruit Jordan Carrion before uncommitted 2017 1B Gianny Galvez would drive in Alvarez for the first run of the game.

Teixeira would hold the 1-0 lead before handing the ball off to the impressive sophomore LHP Ryan Cabarcas in the fifth. Cabarcas would come in and shut down Coral Springs in his three innings of work. He is a bit undersized, but has a clean high 3/4 arm action and showed the ability to locate an 84-86 mph fastball down in the zone to both sides of the plate with some late life. Cabarcas would also show the ability to throw an above average curveball at 73-76 mph with tight spin and depth, that also proved to be a swing and miss pitch. He would also work in an 81-83 mph changeup to right handed hitters. He would finish with three innings pitched while allowing no runs on three hits and striking out five. Although he is undersized, he competes in the zone with three pitches and present stuff with more to come.

Somerset would add three more thanks in big part to four walks in the bottom of the sixth, before Cabarcas would finish off his three inning save in 1-2-3 fashion in the seventh to seal the 3-0 district win for Somerset.
